Galore

The songs on Fixin to Thrill are great. They just don't have the cohesive feeling of a record.

The title track shows a new side to Dragonette, a darker, synth-ful side also exemplified in Gone Too Far, We Rule the World, Come on Be Good, and Don't Be Funny. Then there are tracks like Liar, Stupid Grin, Pick Up the Phone, and Big Sunglasses that could have all easily joined ranks with the dance jams on Galore. Be Good and Be Funny almost bridge the gap, but then there are red herrings like Easy, You're a Disaster, and Okay Dolores that simply seem like they were chucked in just to throw you off.

Top songs: Fixin to Thrill, Gone Too Far, Stupid Grin, Big Sunglasses, Come on Be Good, and Okay Dolores [secretly?] featuring Sara Quin (of Tegan and Sara) on backing vocals.

Fans will like the album; it's just more like being hit by a hailstorm of tunes from every direction rather than taking a headshot from a snowball. Schizophrenic. It'll grow on you if you give it time.

A Little Disappointed . . .

The first album was a refreshing look at electro pop. Yes it was overly sex charged & a little self indulgent, but man were the songs catchy. Not ever had there been an album that left me feeling slapped across the face. I mean this album HAS to be just as brilliant right? WRONG!

Sorry, but this album just feels really dumbed down in comparison. At first look, it seemed to have what it takes to become am exceptional album. Sexy lyrics? Check. Heavy heart thumping beats? Check. Soul? Erm . . .
Simply put, a majority of the album just felt devoid of life. Where's the ever so giddy "Get Lucky" from last year? Where's the beastly "Take it Like a Man"s, "I Get Around"s & "Jesus Doesn't Love Me Anymore"s this time around? The same songs that made me foam at the mouth with every listen have all gone AWOL. Don't get me wrong, there are a few noteworthy songs. I particularly loved "Don't Be Funny" & "Okay Dolores", but most others are forgettable. Honestly, I am saddened by this release. I look forward to their next album however. Cheers.

Formed: 2005 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Genre: Dance

Years Active: '00s

Canadian new wave revivalists Dragonette are a bouncy electro-pop act with a glammy, polymorphic persona rather like that of the Scissor Sisters, with whom they share management, and a sound often akin to Hot Hot Heat, the first album by the Killers, and other successful revivers of the sound of MTV's first half-decade. Prior to the formation of Dragonette, singer and lyricist Martina Sorbara (the daughter of a member of Ontario's provincial government, Finance Minister Greg Sorbara) had maintained...
