iTunes Review
New Zealand native Brooke Fraser's literate lyrics and wistful melodic bent show an increasing maturity, while her sweet, slightly aching voice conveys fragility with great underlying strength. Fraser moves beyond the introspection of 2006’s Albertine to paint more diverse portraits and scenes. Her musical palette is rich and diverse — “Jack Kerouac” percolates with Afrobeat guitar lines, providing contrast to the glistening arctic tones of “Ice On Her Lashes.” A rush of happiness animates “Something In the Water” (a head-over-heels love tune) and “Coachella” (a buoyant celebration of unity through dance and music). Love of a more complicated kind is explored in the tormented yet melodically graceful “Who Are We Fooling” (a duet with Aqualung's Matt Hales). Fraser snatches hope out of pervasive darkness in “Crows & Locusts” and offers a character sketch of a lonely woman in “Betty.” Her Christian outlook shines through in the moody, Daniel Lanois-like title tune. Taken in sum, Flags is an exceptionally intelligent, emotionally resonant work in the best singer/songwriter tradition.
Customer Reviews
First things first....
First of all....let me start by saying, "Shame on you!" to the reviewers who have both insinuated and outright stated that they think Brooke is not using her "God-given" potential properly. It is both short sighted (and frankly, scary) to state that believers should only use their gifts in "churchy" ways that only other believers will hear. God wants His kids really salty and shaken generously over a decaying world. Thank God Brooke is jumping outside the shaker and showing gently and artfully how a believer acts in everyday circumstances. Please...whoever thinks she should restrain herself to "worship" songs only...read Roaring Lambs (and some Tim Keller and C.S. Lewis while you're at it). This lovely collection has inspired me to make sure that my gifts are honed so they can be ready for whatever season God says I'm in...whether it be inside the church walls or outside. Go ye into ALL the world.....remember that part?
That being said...these songs are nice, interesting and fun. Great and awesome? I don't know about that - - but they're certainly a good stretch past where she's been and something interesting from an artist whose work I greatly appreciate.
A Real Artist
I love it when I come across a true artist, writing honest songs with production that supports THE SONGS. There is such a big difference in this and most of what the industry is pumping out these days. Oh yeah, AND Aqualung? NICE!
Beautiful
Such a beautiful album from such a beautiful person... a bit different from the previous release but unique and bright-sounding in it's own new sense. With such a God-inspired voice, the Lord has truly used Brooke in many powerful ways. It is evident through her music and cause. Please purchase this album in support of not only Brooke but in support of the challenge to get God-inspired music to all nations. Beautiful voice and amazing album!
