iTunes Review
The albums from the woman who became a superstar with “You Oughta Know” have become intense confessionals where it’s more like a matter of you have to know. Morissette’s psyche twists and turns like her murderous grammar, making for uncomfortably personal yet riveting listening. “Straitjacket” works as a dressing down of an inattentive lover (“Talking with you’s like talking to a sieve that can’t hear me”) except Morissette’s the one who ends up losing her grip. Producer and co-writer Guy Sigsworth, noted for his work with Bjork, window dresses these tunes with extra beats, strings (“Torch”), tabla (“Citizens of the World”), and vocal manipulations, transforming Morissette’s delivery into a transmission from outer space. This otherworldly charm sweetens “Giggling Again for No Reason,” one of the album’s pure expressions of momentary joy. Elsewhere, it’s a frightening amount of stress for one woman, from “Moratorium,” where she declares, “I declare a moratorium on things relationship,” to “Tapes,” which recounts the unsteady voices in her head. The album plays as much as a therapy session as a piece of music. Intriguing to say the least.
Customer Reviews
Change is Fantastic!
This is easily Alanis' best album since, "Jagged Little Pill". Standout tracks for me are: "Tapes" (Get chills everytime I hear this) "Giggle Again For No Reason" (Very summery) "Not As We" (Easily Alanis' best ballad. Raw and emotional) "Underneath" (Pop melodies at their best and most enjoyable) "Orchid" (Just refreshingly beautiful) I do wosh, however, that Alanis would have included the brilliant B-Side to, "Underneath", "20/20" to the album. Look for it. You won't be dissapointed. Thank you for such a great album, Alanis. I love your talent.
The Evolution of Alanis
After 4 years of absence, Alanis returns with a surprisingly good album. I have been waiting for this album to come out since last September. I have to say that i'm impressed with 'Flavors'. Alanis tackles a new sound with the help with Guy Sigsworth (responsible for Madonna's 'What it feels like for a Girl'). There are a little more electronics used on this album similar to what Madonna did for her 'Ray of Light' album. Despite the new sound like in 'Straitjacket', Alanis still retains her classic style such as on 'Not as We'. These songs are filled with raw emotion and personal lyrics that makes it easy to relate to them. There are also some songs that may relate to her breakup from Ryan Reynolds. For example, Moratorium tells of Alanis' desire to take a break from relationships ("I've never known freedom from intertwining"). Songs such as Citizen of the Planet and Versions of Violence show a darkish sound similar to tracks on 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie'. There are also tracks that lean a little more towards the pop genre (Incomplete). Alanis & Guy really experiment with different 'Flavors' to create this album and the songs really show this. What's also great about this album is that there are bonus tracks which are just as good as the songs that made the final cut. 'Limbo No More' is very emotional while 'On The Tequila' is a fun catchy song. Also check out '20/20', another bonus found on the 'Underneath' cd- single. It has a similar message as 'Moratorium'. Overall, this album is great. I can't stop listening to it. I highly recommend this to fans and new listeners. 'Flavors' has a fresh sound and much different from the last two albums. Her past albums still influence this album which makes it even better. Good job Alanis!
