iTunes Review
For album number three, the Florida to Texas indie-folk star Sam Beam, AKA Iron and Wine, decided to forego the quiet acoustic desperation of 2004’s Our Endless Numbered Days and strike up the band. It’s slightly less satisfying since much of Beam’s appeal has been his soothing, reassuring voice and the luminous melodies he creates with his careful harmonies. They’re still here — and best represented with the acoustic and pedal-steel laced “Resurrection Fern” and “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” — but they're a bit buried beneath arrangements that makes things unusually festive for such a melancholy soul. That’s barroom piano kicking throughout “The Devil Never Sleeps” and strong metal percussion raining down on “Innocent Bones.” “Carousel” uses a vocoder to distort Beam’s voice and “Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car” sounds like Beam sent the band to the junkyard to find their groove. Quiet psychedelic guitar shades “Peace Beneath the City” and “Wolves (Song of the Shepherd’s Dog)” has an atmospheric groove that borders on ambient. Beam took great chances with this album. His natural strengths are slightly obscured and take a little extra time to make themselves felt.

Indescribable
by Jillymack88There's something about this man; I can't describe it, but it would be foolhardy to try pinning words to him that wouldn't even scrape the surface of this immeasurable, overwhelming brilliance. Sam Beam is literally second to none. If it were up to the breed of music spawned from just Iron & Wine to be held up and used as the Bar For Comparison that other bands would have to reach, the nowadays-clogged musical airwaves would suddenly be able to breathe a whole lot easier.
Bravo. Eternally, bravo.

amazing!
by MuSiCfReAk1824the lyrics in this album really makes you think, the melodies stay with you throughout the day, and it's really just an inspiring album. the only thing that irks me, however, are all these twilight fans flocking to iron and wine like hopeless pigeons. now let's get this straight: all you twi-hards who are obsessed with anything twilight-related need to shut up. stop wearing your hot topic skinny jeans, get a life, and put down the twinkie, honey. no one's gonna love you like "edward cullen" so go to your next weight watchers meeting and stop writing reviews for Flightless Bird, American Mouth, probably the only song you've even listened to on this album.
Spirit food, plain and simple
by White Rabbit GrrlI never wrote a review in my life, and I never wanted to until I heard this album. I am a huge fan of Iron & Wine, but I do understand the complaints I have heard of the music being to 'simple', with not enough texture or variety. In a phrase, look no further. Although not one song on this album fails to deliver, all are different. If you don't have the option of buying the whole album, I heartily recommend 'Boy With a Coin'. It also has a gorgeous music video on the internet, which iTunes does not carry for some reason.
So plug in and tune out, 'cause you need time to enjoy this.
