Album Review

The Mollys haven't shown much musical growth since their 2000 debut, Swagger, but it's more a case of if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it than laziness. The band's blend of acoustic (guitar, fiddle, accordion, mandolin, drums) and electric (guitar, bass) instruments contributes to their singular sound, and they still sing and play every track with an almost blistering energy. Dave King, Flogging Molly's lead singer, songwriter, and lyricist, types out the words of his songs on a typewriter that was manufactured in 1916, the year of The Easter Rising, one of the great rebellions in Irish history. His lead vocals match the intensity of the band's playing, and together they serve up another collection of working class, and maybe drinking class, anthems. The music's Irish lilt and furious post-punk energy is evident on almost every track; even the two slow tunes "Float" and "The Story So Far" are full of the boozy, bleary-eyed, fatalistic poetry that makes Irish music at once romantic and grimly realistic. Most of the time, however, the band's blazing energy and instrumental swagger is able to lift your spirits despite the depressing subject matter. "On the Back of a Broken Dream" examines the plight of Iraq war vets who come home to rat-infested hospitals and an indifferent administration. Other tunes, including "You Won't Make a Fool out of Me," "Man with No Country," and "Requiem for a Dying Song" are more straightforward in their condemnation of the greed and heartlessness at the core of the capitalist system, with King fulminating at the powers that be with his usual passion. The band plays with incendiary power, giving the tunes the timeless spirit that infuses all great Irish rebel songs. ~ j. poet, Rovi

Genius

Everything Dave comes up with is sheer poetic genius. His lyrics are eloquent and insanely insightful. They are not just an irish rock band. They have an irish flavor because of their choice of instruments and Dave is from Ireland, but they are a band who puts real thought and real emotion into the lyrics and the playing of their music. They are what REAL music and musicians are all about. You dont just listen to their music you feel it. This new album is another shining example of their dedication to the art and a shining example of pure genius.

Flogging Molly Makes Everyone Feel a Bit Irish!

I was always a little reluctant to try out Irish Punk music, but I found myself amazed by how quickly it took hold of my interest as I began listening to some of Flogging Molly's tracks before heading to Chicago for Lollapalooza. I was sold after just a few listens to some of their more popular tracks and I just couldn't stop listening to the energetic, yet edgy sound the band has to offer. It's the day after Lollapalooza and I still can see Dave King saluting us with a bottle in hand telling us that it was our day to be Irish. During the show I found myself dancing my own little jig and constantly pumping my fist to the fast paced and heart felt Celtic Punk. Needless to say, even after seeing The Raconteurs, Radiohead, and Rage Against the Machine, I couldn't find a more energetic band than these fun lovin Irish Punkers. A definite great live show, great record, and a highlight of my Lollapalooza 2008!

Brilliantly grand

Flogging Molly is one of the best Irish rock bands out there. Float is a little more rebellious than past albums, less angry than Swagger and a touch more cheery, like Drunken Lullabies, while retaining a true, green, Irish core.
