iTunes Review

Floating Action is North Carolina musician/producer Seth Kauffman (not to be confused with pianist Seth Kaufman — one “f”). After recording under his own name on both HighTone and Park the Van Records, Kauffman adopted the pseudonym Floating Action. Expanding on his “Southern fried Beck”-isms, Floating Action operates in an incongruous but fluid pastiche of styles, with impressive results. The lulling guitar and snare drums of  “To Connect” alongside the languid, faintly tropical “Marie Claire” make for two slices of summery indie-pop heaven, while Kauffman’s dry, rocker-boy vocals trying to make whoopee with the sensual, 70’s soul rhythms of “Don’t Stop Loving Me Now” is charmingly off-kilter. That same, almost preppy-sounding voice weaves skillfully in and out of the old time ska-flavored “Dying Punch,” and Kauffman injects more honey (and a backup vocalist) on the sensual, soulful “Could You Save Me.” Every note, every instrument (including guitar, drums, sitar and keyboards) is played by Kauffman, who is also responsible for all artwork/web site components for Floating Action.

A Sonicly Rhythmic Masterpiece

Seth Kauffman is no stranger to the ins and outs of the music making process. Taking on the pseudonym Floating Action, Seth crafts a lyrically warm and generally upbeat assault of groovy soul on his self-titled album. Not only is this a powerful piece of music, Seth crafted all the songs using instruments played by himself. A true recluse. To better understand this album you must basically immerse yourself in the absolute denseness of the record. It forces you to wallow in it's vast sonic-soul, where Kauffman can initiate the listener into a psychadelic frenzy of sound ("So Vapor") or hook classic rock fans with an immediately catchy guitar hook ("Unrobbed"). Think a Southern Beck, and replace his jaded antics with a very home-y Dr. Dog lo-fi quality. With such a slew of musical slop being manufactured and sold to the willing ears of hundreds of thousands here in America, Floating Action manages to stay afloat in a sea of forgettability. Whether it is the infectious bassline on "50 Lashes" or the lyrical cunning on "Don't Stop Loving Me Now" or even the musical melting-pot of sound in "Say Goodbye", fans who can appreciate the lo-fi and fans of indie music and fans..well fans of great music can be fully gratified to know the future is bright for Seth Kauffman A.K.A Floating Action.

Love it, love it !

I love the lazy southern vocals and the thumping basslines. It's country, it's reggae, it's soul,a tinge of psychedelia, and garage rock. It's everything. I was trying to think of my favorite song off this album, but it's hard to choose and that's definitely a good thing!

seth kauffman is a genius

who would believe it's one dude doing all of that? another lo-fi soul masterpiece. i thought it would be hard to follow 'research' but kauffman brings the heat again.
