iTunes Review

After 2007’s excellent, ska-focused Strictly Rude, Boston’s Big D & The Kids Table took a gamble on throwing out the mohawked baby with the bathwater in favor of a sound they dubbed “stroll,” a blend of soul, ska, reggae and double-dutch. With producer Joe Gittleman (the Mighty Mighty Bosstones) again at the helm, this album feels even more evolved than Strictly Rude, and the aforementioned flavors are fairly well represented. The breezy “Describing the Sky” flows along on a soulful ska vibe, and “I,I,I,” is a fraternal nod to the 2 Tone sound. Female back-up vocals (the Doped Up Dollies) are a presence throughout Fluent In Stroll, but are most effective on the double-dutch inspired “Doped Up Dollies…” If longtime fans are missing the moshpit, they might appreciate the upbeat party anthems “Fluent In Stroll” and “Not F*****g Around,” both rooted in ska-punk, or the rock-steady spirit of “Chin Up, Boy.” The ruminative uplift of “We Can Live Anywhere!,” the languid, dubby “Been Wishing On,” and the inventive arrangements and playful horns and bongos on “Where Did All The Women Go?” and “Down Around Here” are a breath of fresh air.

how can anyone say this is a bad album?!

Its a new style.....yes; but its done right! Ive listened to the album (unknowingly) over 70 times since last thursday. Its got such a great sound! definitely my new favorite album from big d. (ive been listening to them for 8 years so ive seen their progression.)

amazing

ill admit it does sound different from their old stuff but its still amazing. describing the sky is a perfect summer song and there are so many good songs on here that will put you in a good mood. does anyone agree?

big d's best yet.

i've followed big d for as long as i can remember, and being in my twenties...i was probably around 12-13 when i discovered their music. every record showed a slow progression towards this mellow, matured, chill "stroll" that vibes out of this record like none other. i absolutely love it. strictly rude, good luck, and all the others were great. the punkier side of the band definitely comes into play at live shows, making them one of if not my absolute favorite live acts...but as far kicking back, smoking a joint, and relaxing... this record takes the cake. this is the best of big d yet. hopefully many more will follow. good luck to these guys. they're down to earth, personable, REAL people with an unmatched passion and love for their music.

The Boston ensemble Big D and the Kids Table brought on their fast-paced style of ska-punk upon their debut in 1995. But like most ska bands, a revolving lineup frequented for the next three years as the Allston-based crew self-released their debut 1997 split with pop-punkers Drexel, Shot by Lammi (recorded for only $700), and the Live EP. Both were issued on their own Fork in Hand Records, run by vocalist David McWane and bassist Steve Foote. By the time Big D signed with Asian Man Records, the...
