Album Review

During their few years together in the late '90s and early 2000s, Antipop Consortium blazed a trail for forward-thinking rap. The trio of Beans, High Priest, and M. Sayyid (plus the critical help of longtime engineer Earl Blaize) rapped plenty of abstract scientifical madness, but they also had intelligence and hardcore flow to spare (think A Tribe Called Quest plus Marvel Comics). Musically, they were influenced by electronica but they also had the hard-hitting beats necessary for survival in a heavily competitive rap world. (Not for nothing were they on Warp, one of the best places to find experimental hip-hop in the early 2000s.) Of course, it's always a grand proposition when standard-bearers return after a long absence, but no one in rap or experimental techno could have been fully prepared for Fluorescent Black, easily their best record — packed with more highlights than anything they'd released before, but also more cohesive than they'd ever been. With heavy claps on the beat but experimental effects shooting all over the mix, it's just as innovative as fans would expect. And the rapping sounds rejuvenated, with Beans particularly, as Antipop Consortium rap over the best beats they've heard in years (despite a healthy number of projects during the interim). None of this is going to sell enough records to bother Jay-Z, and a track or two veer too close to MF Doom for comfort, but Fluorescent Black is easily one of the best rap records of the year. ~ John Bush, Rovi

IT'S THE RETURN

Sounds underground because IT IS underground. Anti-pop Consortium returns with Fluorescent Black, the highly anticipated follow-up to Arrhythmia. Hot tracks include but are not limited to the opener "Lay Me Down", "NY to Tokyo", "Dragunov" and "Reflections". This album will grow on you, not a first listen "I love it!!!" album...too smart for that.

Pro - Anti-Pop Consortium

Yes! Yes! Yes! Finally a new APC album. I like my music weird, corky, artsy and original, I can't think of another group in hip-hop that embodies this aesthetic, and can still make beats, rhythms, melodies that make me want to pop, lock and wild out. Their sound isn't simply a statement against pop music, but a well thought out and designed style of their own that isn't pretentious, stuffy or dull at all!

amazing

APC, amazing as always. Robbie, the fool that gave it 1 star (i'm assuming he/she meant zero) and wonders why their name is "Anti Pop" Consortium, is a total idiot and probably listens to black eye peas and lil wayne, which is well, pop music. i always find it funny when radio "hip-hoppers" can't even recognize real hip-hop when they hear it. they actually hate hip-hop. those fools are the disco lovers of our generation, and they don't even know it. total squares, man. what can you expect from the L7 generation, bunch of lames.

Biography

Formed: 1997 in NY

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Antipop Consortium emerged in the early 2000s as one of the underground hip-hop scene's most inventive groups, bridging the gap between New York hip-hop and glitchy IDM. Group members Priest, Beans, and M. Sayyid first joined forces in 1997, along with producer E. Blaize. After some underground singles that didn't reach far beyond New York's boroughs, the Ark 75 label released Tragic Epilogue, the group's debut full-length, in 2000. Though the album wasn't quite as daring as Antipop Consortium's...
