iTunes Review

This Canadian trio's self-titled debut proved the band was adept at the heavy blues-rock of the era, but it was with its second album, 1975's Fly By Night, that Rush established its signature sound: a mix of studio wizardry and athletic musicianship coupled with a desire to break past conventional songforms. Mostly, this was the result of new drummer Neil Peart, whose inquisitive lyrics and extra polyrhythmic emphasis would make them arena-rock superstars before decade's end. Peart's unusual sensibility can be heard in the nearly nine-minute epic "By-Tor and the Snow Dog," the extra flicker driving "Anthem" and the graceful, jazzy touches of "Making Memories." Singer Geddy Lee pushes his voice to the upper reaches of his range. "Beneath, Between and Behind" sounds like a drag race between drummer, guitarist and singer to see who can twist and turn with greater dexterity. One part hard rock, two parts progressive ambition, and the band was off in a prolific and singular direction.

Not as impressed.

I dove into this album with the mentality that Neil Peart's introduction to Rush would be cause for some freaking epic music. I don't want to bash Fly By Night, but it seriously didn't hit my expectations. Maybe I need to give it some more time. The only songs that were actually memorable for me were "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" (which is a great examplar of Neil Peart's incredible drumming), "Making Memories", and "Rivendell". I can greatly appreciate "Rivendell", for I hear it somewhat as a lullaby. Geddy Lee lulling me to sleep? Win.

I suppose I'll give this album some more play time before I rule it out as not meeting my standards. Maybe I'll rewrite this review in a while.

There's something about this album. I like alot of 70's era guitar, this is some pretty good hard rock & is different sounding than later rush outings. It fits in nicely between Rush's self titled album and their masterpiece: 2112 (Caress Of Steel continued the progression, but was perhaps a little too ambitious). Fly By Night is too often overlooked though, there are some real gems such as Anthem, Fly By Night, & In the End. By-Tor and the Snow Dog is many a fan favorite as well. The lyrics sometimes get into fantasy though, (alot of references to "the dark lord" & such) and it's not Rush at the peak of perfection, but it's great riffs, & nice solos make it one of my favorites & I'd take it over any rush album made after 81's moving pictures,(yes I like it more than signals) but many are too quick to dismiss this album, I gave it a try & I'm glad I did.

4.5 stars.

The Album that put Rush on the Map

by RAN XEROX

For it's time, this album was a ground-breaking progressive rock album with odd time signatures such as 7/8 on Anthem with blistering guitar riffs that make many guitar instructors blush. The drumming from Neil Peart on this album shows his budding brilliance. This is a must for any Rush fan's collection.
