Album Review
On Flying Boy, Chris Kasper finds that there's still some purchase left in the worn "acoustic singer/songwriter" format for subtle originality. Kasper is an inventive guitar picker and strummer with a pleasing rasp of a voice who offers up a collection of pretty, gritty, and wistful tracks on this album, from the deep burnished groove of "Bit Older" to the delicate and beautiful "The Stoop." There is something equally rootsy and ethereal about the Philadelphia resident's songs, which often seem to drift by like fat clouds in a summer sky. Kasper is best at his most direct, when he is aiming squarely at a groove or offering up a pretty melody. When he moves toward abstraction or verbosity, things don't work as well. "Fly by Night" has a Neil Young-like oddness to it that doesn't work as well as his more direct tunes, while "Crazy Dog, Crazy Man, Crazy World" focuses too much on narrative and not enough on melody. But then Kasper hits you with the deep sparkling groove of "Gone the Summer" and the closing lament, "Farewell" (which, like a few tracks here, calls to mind John Martyn), and all trespasses are forgiven. At the end of the day, Flying Boy is evidence of a talented artist still engaged in exploration.
Customer Reviews
Chris Kasper "Flying Boy"
I had the privilege of getting to see Chris Kasper open up for one of my favorite bands G. Love & Special Sauce this summer, and I have to see he totally blew me away and I immediately bought his cd. "Flying Boy" is the perfect blend of acoustic folk music Kasper's beautiful, melodic voice compliments his lovely and soothing guitar play. Standout tracks are hands down "And You Wait", and "Underneath and All Around". Definitely purchase this album it will be worth you while. Folk music at its best.
Unheard of but unbelievable
I saw Chris Kasper in philly at a kind of no-name spotlight. He 100% took my breath away. Like many others that were there, I bought his CD FlyingBoy immediately. His tones are lyrical, beautiful, and flourescent. He deserves to be better known. Spread his name.
Roots music from the soul.
I used to hang out with Kasper back in the day in West Virginia when my brother was in his college band "Waterside Session." Even then I knew that life had great things in store for Chris and his incredible talent for songwriting. His lyrical style is fresh in a time when so much of music is "manufactured" with little soul or lack of passion. Kasper's music speaks both to and from the heart. Keep up the good work friend!
