iTunes Review
Let's get straight to the point here: Foley Room is the best Amon Tobin album in years. Some might even say it's the Brazilian beat conductor's finest work since the carefully sculpted productions of Supermodified. It's not simply because of the songs, either (although they bang the box and brain quite nicely, from the heavyweight breaks and Baroque ballroom dance of "Bloodstone" to the claustrophobic chase scene of "Always"). The real achievement of this record is in its splintering samples, a bank of organic and oppressive, retro and futurist sounds that are as strange as they are satisfying. That's because Tobin built each track from a number of field recordings that suggest bugs crawling across a decaying piano ("Esther's"), a duel waged with laser canons and buckets of water ("Kitchen Sink"), and a drowning harpist ("Horsefish"), among other abstract images. According to Tobin, this technique is meant to transcend "music that was based purely on sound design and tunes that were written to physically move people." In other words, it's banging, but good luck understanding why.

Revolutionary (even for Adoni Santos)
"Amon" Adonai Santos de Araujo "Tobin's" soundscapes have reached a sonic level never experienced by modern eardrums. His unique bag of tricks, dare I say organic lessons from Chaos Theory (aka - Ubisoft’s The Splinter Cell video game sound track - which can be found in 5.1) has propelled Tobin’s artistic feats to unrealized heights. Foley Room remains honest to his Amon's compositional roots, constructed with razor sharp polyrhythms, sensual organic swells, tasteful gentle-monster drum kits, angelic chord progressions, and frosted with ear-enigmatic sound design. This album will stop you in your day to day tasks and rigmarole, and catalyze you to sit/lay down and immerse yourself in the purity and power of a superhero's sound.
not his best, but still a worthy purchase
"Foley Room" still carries Amon's distinct signature in the manipulation of sound. It has a darker tone than most electronic albums, using ambient sounds and jazzy beats. This album is a bit more of an experiment in foley sound (as the album title implies), but, still manages to provide fans, myself included, with what they have been craving for so long. Another great array of "late-night driving" music. New listeners would do better starting with the soundtrack for "Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory" to develop their taste in his music. IMO, it's his masterpiece. It's more accessible and retains a more consistent tone throughout, which, makes it a better listen straight through. "Foley Room" is still a great album, with highlights like, "bloodstone", "the killer's vanilla" and my fav "always". It just a bit more of aquired taste. So fans, rejoice!
Beautiful stray from his older techniques.
I've been reading a lot about how this, although a rediculously and beautifully done sound design endeavor, lacks in the field of melody, and focuses too much on using the found sounds and feild recordings. I'll only agree somewhat, because in these songs, Tobin has created a newer way to define the word 'melody'. The formal definition is "sequence of notes that makes up a musical phrase", and in doing what Tobin has done, he has not only created phrases with notes of a new kind, but constructed a beautiful new language in which to write these phrases. There are a good ammount of songs here that are melodiously beautiful, namely Killer's Vanilla, and though some may disagree, Ever Falling and Always. The highlight is, hands down, At the End of the Day, the most beautiful experience I've had this year, and it being remeniscent of Chocolate Lovely (one of Tobin's greatest concoctions) makes it suitable for repetition. B.T.W. Don't get it off iTunes if you want the DVD documenting Tobin's feild recording adventures.
