iTunes Review

Though Paul Westerberg can write and perform the well-honed pop tune, it isn’t the catchy, lovable hook that’s driven his finest compositions either with the Replacements or in his ongoing solo career. It’s the emotional commitment he brings to the performance. His manicured pop albums from the 1990s — 1996’s Eventually in particular — all have their moments of brilliance, but even their strongest draw has been Westerberg himself. His withered, weather-beaten voice conveys incredible weight and as applied to songs on 2004’s Folker as personally involved as “My Dad,” “Anyway’s All Right” and “Lookin’ Up in Heaven,” which reflect upon his father’s recent passing, he manages to pay tribute without lapsing into cheap sentiment, keeping his wits, love and humor together with churning Stones-like rhythms and an unlikely optimism, though not optimism in the traditional sense. Westerberg will never be confused with a speaker at an ‘Up With People’ rally. But there is a joy to his music making that bursts forth in his unpretentious, matter-of-fact recordings where an electric guitar represents an escape to a better world just within his reach.

Folker

Excellent album! Ignore the generic music review on the left. Folk Star, Lookin' Up In Heaven, As Far As I Know, My Dad, How Can You Like Him? and $100 Groom are some of Westerberg's best (and the list of his best work is very long)! One of my favorite features of this album is the production. It's simple, and not clean or sterile - it sounds real. A very refreshing change of pace from so much music that's out there - even from other alternative artists. Bottom line is if you like Paul Westerberg and his work connects with you, you'll love this album. One of America's greatest living songwriters!

Clearly Heartfelt

Its tough to listen too at times because of sloppy arrangements and a worn out voice. However, the honesty and heart Paul puts into his work are clearly heard on this album.

Get 49:00....of your time/life!!!

The new album he recorded in his basement is BRILLIANT!!! It's all there, dirty rock n roll, Westerberg charm and still can turn a cliche phrase on its ear. Out of tune and so so vocals but thats what we love so go get it already....one long mp3 but its only 49 cents on Amazon. I love everything hes done but 49:00 may be the most Sir Paul has gotten me since the GrandpaBoy recordings.

After disbanding the Replacements in 1991, singer/songwriter Paul Westerberg resurfaced the following year with two songs on the Singles soundtrack. A year later, Westerberg released his first solo album, 14 Songs, in the summer of 1993. Although the record received generally positive reviews and spawned the modern rock hit "World Class Fad," the album failed to break the songwriter into the mainstream. Three years later, Westerberg released his second solo album, Eventually. Like...
