iTunes Review

Fans of Little Wings, Will Oldham, and Devendra Banhart are discovering Bon Iver, the musical id of Justin Vernon, who recorded the basic tracks for this solo debut at his father’s hunting cabin, deep in the Wisconsin woods. Camped out with a guitar and a desire for isolation and clear-eyed focus (plus “a few microphones and some aged recording equipment”), Vernon emerged after several snowy months with a batch of intimate and melancholy works that will warm any chilled heart (drums and the occasional horn and flute were added later). The sound of Bon Iver (pronounced as would the French for “good winter:” “bohn eevair”) isn’t too far from the path Vernon forged with DeYarmond Edison, his previous band, although the bare-bones nakedness of Bon Iver’s songs somehow seem warmer than the bare-bones songs of the band’s. The opening choral segment on “Lump Sum” is startlingly lush, enveloping the listener in an ambient haze. “The Wolves” also builds up to a surprisingly epic feel, but tracks like the beautiful “Flume” and “Skinny Love,”  with their unadorned acoustic guitar and simple vocals, put the listener right there in the North woods of Wisconsin, deep into a snowy winter.

An Album to be Loved Entirely

In a world that thrives on mass production and easy access-- where I can have almost any song or album I can think of in a matter of seconds-- it's become a difficult thing to sit down and truly enjoy an album in its entirety. It's a matter I was lamenting to a friend of mine; that, much like someone in and out of slightly-meaningful relationships might miss the puppy-love days, I longed for the time when I would sit entire days away, just me and the music, until I knew every note and nuance. I had, until recently, thought those days to be long gone. I had, until recently, been absolutely right. But life has a way of bringin 'round those second-chance lovers; and so here is mine.

Simply Melodic, Beautiful, Acoustic Poetry

Bon Iver (aka Justin Vernon) will be a stand out for 2008. This album was originally self released in late 2007 and he wrote this record storing himself up in a rural cabin in northwestern Wisconsin for three months. The album is chock full of emotion, not only in his poetic song writing but also his amazing falsetto. "Skinny Love" is by far one of the most addicting songs on the album and also the single...just a great song to blair in your car at full volume. You can almost feel his hurt/pain in his voice in the song...sick...absolutely sick. If you are a fan of "folk rock" if you have to put a genre on in, then I highly recommend to check this out. 5 stars and then some. This will be one of the top albums of 2008.

Haunting and Rich

Though this is a deeply contemplative album, it somehow manages to remain quite accessable. In fact it may be one of the most complete albums that I have heard in years, indeed from top to bottom there is no track which seems out of place. With For Emma, Forever Ago, vocalist Justin Vernon has masterfully desinged a ghostly soundscape which seems on many occasions to evoke the chilling aura of winter. "Flume", "Re: Stacks", "Skinny Love", and "Blindsided" are all outstanding tracks. Final Grade: 5/5

Justin Vernon began recording under the nom de band Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings, and — to a certain extent — Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Vernon's solo project took DeYarmond Edison's introspective, folky sound and embellished it with squinchy, quirky orchestral touches that nodded to Sparklehorse and the drifty optimism of the Flaming Lips. Vernon moved back to Wisconsin the winter following...
