Album Review

Few Irish bands that are as deeply rooted in Celtic tradition as Solas is manage to rock anywhere near as hard as they do. It's not just that they play with vigor and power — it's that they rock. On their eighth album of new material (and first with singer Mairéad Phelan) they focus, as usual, on traditional tunes and songs, investing everything with their trademark blend of off-handed virtuosity and joyful energy, and they throw in a few subtle curveballs as well — such as a lovely arrangement of Rickie Lee Jones' "Sailor Song," and another of an old Dillards number called "There Is a Time." Hipster string band the Duhks join in for a couple of tracks as well. But while there are no weak tracks on this album, its most thrilling moments turn out to be the most traditional (or at least traditional-sounding) ones: a stunning rendition of "The Gallant Hussar," the spectacular reel set that opens the program, and a pair of original jigs by bandleader Seamus Egan and guitarist Eamon McElholm. The exception to that rule is a drop-dead gorgeous modern song called "Merry Go Round," a tune that is not especially Celtic in feel but that fits beautifully into the program anyway. Phelan's voice is quite different from that of original singer Karan Casey — it's a bit darker and grainier, and it brings a nice new facet to Solas' established sound.

The only Irish band in America (worth listening to...)

Just gave this new album a listen on my way into work this morning and I'm loving it. I'm a fan of all the Solas lineups since the beginning and have been lucky enough to hear each one of them live. I ::really:: like Mairead Phelan though. Beautiful voice and she really just fits the band. I hope she sticks around for a while. Favorite tracks on first listen are Merry Go Round and The Gallant Hussar. Still trying to figure out who the second voice is on Merry Go Round. Is that the Duhks? Dang the lack of liner notes on digital downloads! Love it... keep up the good music. Can't wait to see you in a few weeks in Leesburg, VA.

Solas

Great Album, just saw them on Friday in Rosslynn. Just by chance we got to see them again for there release party of this cd and they are just awesome, check all there albums out they are great for long rides or even sitting out side with a few cold ones :)

great new songs

I recently got to see Solas at a music festival in Virginia, and they were truly great live! This is another fun, thoroughly enjoyable album of traditional and new irish folk tunes. If you like good toe-tapping irish music, then Solas is a perfect fit. Once again, the talents of Winifred Horan are on great display. With a new vocalist, things sound slightly different, but all of the songs are delightful! I can't wait to see another Solas concert!
