Album Review

More than a few lovers of '70s and '80s rock have claimed that much of the fun went out of rock music in the early '90s, observing that a great deal of today's post-Nevermind alternative rock is extremely serious-minded and introspective. Of course, there are countless exceptions to that generalization; no one can accuse No Doubt, Garbage, Powder (a great band from Los Angeles), or Veruca Salt of not being fun. Furthermore, there's no law stating that rock music always has to push the party button — if Charlie Parker and bebop was when jazz lost much of its sexy frivolity, perhaps rock took an inevitably comparable turn with the grunge/Nirvana/Pearl Jam upheaval of the early '90s. Nonetheless, there's still some room for glamorous, hedonistic, escapist pleasure in the rock world — and Kill Hannah certainly brings a healthy dose of glam to alternative pop/rock on For Never & Ever, which is their first album for Atlantic after recording independently in the past. This 2003 release is simultaneously cute and dark, and one track that brilliantly epitomizes Kill Hannah's blend of frivolity and subversion is "Kennedy." The tune doesn't describe Ted Kennedy's family to make a political statement; rather, Kill Hannah describes the Kennedys as glamorous, if tragic, jet setters and uses them to echo (in an ironic, tongue-in-cheek fashion) rock's live fast/die young clichés. "Kennedy" is among the CD's many examples of delightfully trashy, decadent fun, which is what Kill Hannah does so well — and they do it with an attractive sound that could be described as a blend of Garbage, the Smashing Pumpkins, Republica, and My Bloody Valentine. Anyone who complains that rock isn't as much fun as it once was needs to pay close attention to For Never & Ever, which paints a consistently exciting picture of the Chicago-based alterna-rockers.

One of the best...

This band, Kill Hannah, is one of the best glam-rock bands that I have heard in a long time. If u like rock with a dream-pop twist, then you'll adore this album!!

e-punk done glam style

Although easily categorizable as eyeliner punk, a genre having more to do with the androgyny of a band lead than their sound, Kill Hanna is post-grunge glam rock done right. It's manic and kinetic, upbeat with out being saccharine, a very nice album, but honestly lacks some of the wonderful grind and crunch of their earlier albums, and fans of those may find this offering slightly over produced. Album flow is also an issue for me, as track #4 seems to be completely different from the rest of the album, and at the very least should have been hidden in a bonus track, if not axed from the album completely.

Sure, the vocals are feminine.

But Mat manages to pull it off. :] Now, I've heard a few of Kill Hannah's pre-Atlantic songs, and the adding and taking away of members has changed the sound quite a bit. But that's not saying they sounded bad. As a matter of fact, it's actually really really good. =]

Biography

Formed: 1995 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Kill Hannah was essentially vocalist/guitarist Mat Devine's dorm room four-track baby until a move to Chicago in 1995. After recruiting a few supporting players, Devine and Kill Hannah debuted the sound — a glitzy mix of goth tendencies and fashionably crunchy modern rock. Steady local gigs followed, as did a series of self-released EPs and a couple of albums (1997's Here Are the Young Moderns, 1999's American Jet Set). Devine finally found a lineup that stuck as his band's dogged, sometimes...
