After a streak of hits and a spell of personal troubles, Tracy Lawrence released his more-than-credible comeback album For The Love in 2007. The Texas-born singer’s unaffected baritone and easy-going demeanor made him a natural for country radio in the ‘90s. By self-releasing his new album, Lawrence avoids the Nashville trends of the moment in favor of something more personal. Whether he’s singing of family life (“As Easy As Our Blessings,””Till I Was A Daddy Too”), friendship (“Find Out Who Your Friends Are”) or the rewards of personal integrity (the title tune), the theme of gratitude reoccurs in these tracks. Romance and heartache aren’t neglected either — in “Just Like Her,” Lawrence battles an old flame’s memory to a draw. A few upbeat numbers pick up the pace, especially “You Can’t Hide Redneck” and the guys-night-out anthem “Just Like That.” For the most part, though, the mood here is reflective and a bit subdued. For The Love is a mature look at life, the work of an artist who has more on his mind than obvious singles. Judging by this album, Lawrence deserves a second shot at the big time.
