Dark romantic synthy greatness
Shimmers like a glittery prom dress in the dark, swirling in fog, crouched over a ouija board. For this alone, this one will probably stay under the radar, but deserves more accolades than most albums of 2011. Lush and dreamy track Casual Diamond features a wailing guitar and Stephanie Franciotti's trademark ethereally devastated vocals to create a haze of prom night style angst. Romantic Streams and Stickers are perfect singles and both hold a sense of bright neon longing set against anachronistically new age synth beats. Pitch perfect album closer, Don't Poison Everything, is a psychedelic dirge that harkens back to one of the group's earlier tracks, Your World is Night. Watch out for a few instrumental tracks that swirl and loom forebodingly, namely Cryingame; they may leave you unsettled, but give way to incandescent and heart-wrenching beauty in songs like The Heavens Turn By Themselves. This album has a lo-fi sound, but nonetheless shimmers in the brooding and warbling universe it occupies, and deserves great attention in the candle lit bedrooms of sensitive lovers, the tight-knit circles of stoner friends, and the headphones of the introspective.
