iTunes Review

Broken Social Scene have become something of a Canadian supergroup, having an association with Jason Collett, Leslie Feist, Stars and Metric among the many other projects undertaken by its loose collection of members. Still considered to be the main project of founders Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, BSS continue to explore the often-overlooked musical spaces where genres never quite meet. There’s a modest indie-rock feel to the performances where everything blends together, but the songwriting aims for larger expanses, as the arena tumble of “World Sick” and “Forced to Love” make perfectly clear. “Sentimental X’s” features the work of Feist, and Metric’s Emily Haines and Stars’ Amy Millan for its softly pedaled charm. “Chase Scene” slips into prog-rock territory with its suspenseful keyboards and otherworldly vocal ensembles. “All to All” shifts towards a weightless female vocal and synth dancetrip. “Romance to the Grave” marks a similar trip through the galaxy. “Meet Me In the Basement” strips it down to pure instrumentalism and takes a pretty wild circus ride.

Sweetest Kill

The Track "Sweetest Kill" (previously "Untitled #2") is worth the $10 in itself. Great album! These guys never let me down. Keep em' coming

More refined, but equally amazing

This is a much more focused and refined album than their previous album, the great self-titled album from 2005. That being said, I feel that their work benefits from the added focus on making a collection of good songs without all of the instrumental interlude type songs from their previous albums which, while enjoyable, could get a little boring when you were just trying to listen to a few songs rather than listen to an entire album at once. This album is full of amazing songs, and on the one track where they actually do an instrumental track, "Meet Me in the Basement," may be one of the best things they've yet to commit to tape. Excellent work BSS!

Highlights: World Sick, Texico B*****s, Meet Me in the Basement, Sentimental X's, Sweetest Kill, Romance to the Grave... But really the entire album is worth buying, so just go ahead and do that.

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when K.C. Accidental's Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, formerly of By Divine Right, bonded their friendship into a band. They spent the next few years honing an atmospheric rock sound in their native Toronto and the dynamic was great. Feel Good Lost marked their debut album in 2001 and introduced a revolving cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's fellow mate from Do Make Say Think, Charles Spearin, was added to the band, as well as Evan Cranley (Stars),...
