Album Review

With their fourth and best album, Peterborough, England's the Contrast roll out 14 tunes that pay tribute to 1980s college radio icons like the Smithereens and R.E.M. with spirit, talent, and conviction. The fiery "Caught in a Trap" charges forth with the melodic gifts of singer/songwriter/guitarist David Reid, but the three-part harmonies of "Forget to Tell the Time" and the Kinks-on-steroids thump of "Different Again" are just gateways to mid-album keepers like the contagious, simple pop of "Someone Else's Logo," the Costello-like blues/jazz crawl of "Hold Your Fire," and the bittersweet, Rickenbacker-steered "Ink." Embraced by Little Steven on his Underground Garage radio show for good reason, these gents keep it tight and interesting. An exceptional effort, Forget to Tell the Time finds the Contrast coming in clear and in Technicolor. ~ John D. Luerssen, Rovi

Back to Good Ole' Eighties Mod/Powerpop

But...w/a fresh twist. Was not into these guys before I heard them on Underground Garage and this poppie hot tune "Caught in Trap" was spun. What a gem. Great backing vocals and power pop melodies. Reminds me a bit of the UK 80's bands The Times or The Gents. I now have Fade Back In (2004). Pick this up NOW!

Get Hooked Up

First-rate power pop from the pen of lead singer/guitarist David Reid. Infectious hooks and clever melodies that crackle with intensity. Great stuff!

Formed: Peterborough, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Hailing from the comparatively tiny English Midlands town of Peterborough (roughly halfway between Birmingham and Cambridge), the Contrast are an unpretentious guitar pop group akin to the Dentists and other '80s U.K. indie guitar bands, albeit with a stronger debt to late '70s new wave acts like Television and Blondie. The group's original lineup (comprising singer/songwriter and guitarist David Reid, bassist Chris Corney, and drummer James Crossley) recorded 2000's Mystery #1 for the U.K. indie...
