Album Review

Success didn't change Midnight Oil with their 1990 album Blue Sky Mining. The Australian band had finally broken through with their previous record, Diesel and Dust, but chart accomplishments didn't temper the group. Blue Sky Mining found lead singer Peter Garrett and the boys singing about familiar themes with their usual passion. The songs aren't quite on par with those from Diesel and Dust, but there's still enough here to make it a worthy follow-up. The lead track "Blue Sky Mine" deals with the oppression of the lower working class within the context of a mining company. The immediately catchy cut managed to find mid-chart success. Other notable tracks are the driving "Forgotten Years," which also managed a bit of airplay, and the menacing "Mountains of Burma." The band stumble only once, on the clumsy love song "Shakers and Movers."

Probably their best, though not most popular album...

Finally got to see these guys live on their final tour for Capricornia in a bar in Vermont... Well worth the trip!

'Blue Sky' is definitely my favorite disc of their whole catalog. 'Movers & Shakers' is unfairly maligned by the big brother reviewer: "Tomorrow's child takes concrete first steps and they'll drink champagne or be damned..."
Really? That's a great couplet... especially for the Reagan aftermath... it stands the test of time.

The entire album is solid and better production than it's more celebrated predecessor 'Diesal & Dust'... Midnight Oil was often chalked up as a one hit / anthem wonder of the 80's. Many missed the boat, but this was the album that solidified them for me... 'Earth & Sun & Moon' as a whole is well worth the time also... but for me, 'Blue Sky Mining' was the peak of that three album period... and if I remember right, the 'Forgotten Years' video holds up far better than most from that era.
