Album Review
The eighth album by the considerably popular and acclaimed Canadian folk-rock outfit Great Big Sea, Fortune's Favoor was released in 2008 by Warner Canada. Featuring the singles "Walk on the Moon," "Love Me Tonight," and "Here and Now," the album was yet another success for the group, continuing their streak of (at least) gold record worthy sales, and peaked at number five on Canadian charts.

GBS's St Pepper.... best studio album to date
GBS has finally found their comfort level with their approach to songs. After a couple of studio albums that were off-times jarringly separating songs styles with either a pop sound and a traditional sound, with Fortune's Favor the band assuredly achieves a blend of instrumentation throughout the CD in a way not heard this consistantly since 1999's Turn. This is a hugely mature production - influences are evident with reggae, pop, and Irish punk rock moments, however the band confidently mixes in the bodhran, banjo, bouzouki, fiddle and accordion into even the hardest rock track. Kris MacFarlane show a wide range of percussive elements here - like Sean McCann's bodhran, MacFarlane fleshes out the sound to enhance each track and never ever does he merely keep time on the drum kit. The most impressive thing is how loose the production feels. Alan Doyle does several terrific songs sounding like another singer altogether (80's style chorus in Love Me Tonight, the whiskey infused rasp of Oh Yeah). The band's long term friendship with the Barenaked Ladies may be showing here. The same degree of goofiness with "what the heck" extras or fluid genres shifting is on Fortune's Favor. GBS is not emulating BNL though - to their credit they still are the pride of Newfoundland traditional - several tracks here are fabulous reworkings of traditional tunes that update the sound to blend with all the other tunes terrifically. The band have a winning claim here on a long career with this mavelous CD.
NICE!
One of their most light hearted albums. I enjoyed this one, not quite as much of a rock sound as previous albums, but a good addition. Walk on the Moon is really a must hear.
Great new sounds from Great Big Sea
Great Big Sea's unique sound sews itself a new fabric. The band expands its reach beyond its traditional texture and exercises its individualism. Great Big Sea's harmony, fantastic and hard working instrumental breaks take the listener away to another place and extends the invitation to feel the tug of heart, inspiration, and laughter. This highly rated CD of Newfoundland's beloved band will not disappoint its fans.
