iTunes Review
The title track of David Gray’s 2010 album shuffles with a sense of wanderlust. Gray’s muted his Van Morrison-influenced sense of discovery over the years and instead focused on tighter tunes that get to the point. It’s helped him connect with audiences, but it’s made those who fell in love with 1993’s A Century Ends wonder whatever became of that guy. Well, he shows up from time to time, alongside the more traditional tunes. “Foundling,” “Gossamer Thread” and “Holding On” sound like tunes Van Morrison could’ve put together in his prime. Elsewhere, Gray experiments with horns (“A New Day At Midnight”), rustic folk laments (“We Could Fall in Love Again Tonight”) and mild adult-pop arrangements (“In God’s Name”) that show Gray can be all things to all people. His versatility makes him an unusual talent and his prolific abilities — these tunes were written during the same sessions as his previous album, 2009’s Drawn the Line — ensure his legacy as a committed writer. The Deluxe Edition includes eight additional tunes worthy of his voice, especially “Old Father Time,” “Indeed I Will” and “A Moment Changes Everything.”
Customer Reviews
Still hopeful
Upon first listen, I was very disappointed with the lack of pep. After the fourth listen, I'm happy to say that the songs are growing on me. With Draw The Line, the songs never grew on me. I'm a loyal fan since Flesh and will continue to be, however I'm not as thrilled with the songs David has put out lately. I just don't hear the same passion that I did from the earlier stuff. I'm certainly okay with an artist evolving, but these songs aren't striking a chord with me. With Foundling I'm hearing a similar quietness that I heard with Lost Songs and I enjoyed those slow, quiet tunes very much. This gives me hope that I'll enjoy Foundling. I love a good non-maintream artist...and David Gray is among the absolute best of them...but I also believe that he's completely capable of making songs that would be appreciated in the mainstream as well. I'm encouraged that he put out this album a year after Draw The Line. I will always look forward to the next batch of songs. Rock on David, I enjoy your music.
Why are the best albums only released when the summer is almost over?
Seriously, this is great work, and a hell of a selection.Pick it up along with Ray Lamontagne's new album, and you've got yourself an excellent mixtape.Enjoy the songs as you enjoy the end of summer....
It's kinda drone and boring.....
Sorry folks, but I can't see why this album has been rated so well- there might be 3 tracks that have some spunk and flavor but the rest I find very disappointing... Loved David since 1999 and this is a huge shock to have so many tunes that fall dead. Only been through the album a few times, maybe it'll come around for me. What happened to mixing in some toe-tapping songs with some good beat and melody? Way too many "skips" for me on this one.... perhaps a little too much prolific songwriting going on?
