Album Review

Cocteau Twins' first release following their exodus from the 4AD stable, Four-Calendar Cafe is also, tellingly, their most earthbound effort; as with Heaven or Las Vegas, the emphasis here is on substance as much as style — "Evangeline," "Bluebeard," and "Know Who You Are at Every Age" continue the trio's advance into more accessible melodic and lyrical ground without sacrificing even an ounce of their trademark ethereality.

Life-Changing

I bought this album when I first went to college in the Fall of 1993. I honestly think it changed my life. I had never heard Cocteau Twins before. Hearing them for the first time was pure magic. Unlike anything I could have imagined. The sound of Four-Calendar Cafe, mixed with the Vermont foliage of that Fall, and my first semester at school... it was a sort of awakening. Since then, Cocteau Twins have been my favorite band. This album gets a lot of flack, as many fans prefer their earlier material. I love it all, but this one stands out as my favorite. Must-have tracks are 'Summerhead' and 'Bluebeard' but the whole album is worth purchasing.

Inspires real and unique feelings...

There simply aren’t enough words in the entire human collection of all languages to describe what this music really makes you feel. It’s incredibly creative and unique. The lead singer’s voice carries a vast range of soft and gentle to firm and embracing. The melodies are well thought out and fit so well together in such a unique way. This has become one of my all time favorite albums. I never get tired of it.

Beyond Words

This is the album that got me into the Cocteau Twins. Something about this band is very intoxicating, and has been a big inspiration to my musical career.

A group whose distinctly ethereal and gossamer sound virtually defined the enigmatic image of the record label 4AD, Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland, in 1979. Taking their name from an obscure song from fellow Scots Simple Minds, the Cocteaus were originally formed by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie and later rounded out by Guthrie's girlfriend Elizabeth Fraser, an utterly unique performer...
