The joyfully overblown music of Foxy Shazam scales heights of pomp-rock excess rarely ascended since the heyday of Queen. On their self-titled major label debut, the Cincinnati-based quintet constructs tunes heavy on bone-shaking beats, florid guitar licks and flashy keyboard tickling. Singer Eric Nally fully embraces the Freddie Mercury school of operatic projection, with hints of Dee Snider-style hysteria thrown in. Clearly, the spirit of Queen hovers over such brazen effusions as “Oh Lord,” “Unstoppable” and “The Only Way to My Heart…” But Nally and his crew have found new ways to tease and tweak their listeners as well — “Wanna-Be Angel,” for instance, is a personal manifesto of defiance addressed to the tastemakers of the current rock scene. “Bye Bye Symphony” captures Foxy Shazam at their most expansive, packing in a suite’s worth of ideas into 4:04 minutes. “Evil Thoughts” allows Nally an extended moment of faux-confession over pianist Sky White’s piano flourishes. The manic enthusiasm of the group transforms their songs from clever pastiches into irresistible entertainment.

Sonically Stunning, Vocally Vivacious
The second major release by Foxy marks a definitive evolution from the sheer chaos that was Introducing (Not that I don't thoroughly enjoy that album). Foxy Shazam (the album that is) introduces the world to a newer, tighter, more mature [musically] band. This album becomes a fusion of a plethora of various styles that make for a true listening treat. From blues to Motown, it seems that there is genres the band doesn't enjoy.
Musically, the album is nearly flawless. All the instruments blend together to create a huge sound, without getting lost in a sea of noise. The band works together to meld a sound which brings out the technical and writing skills of each member. Of course, the piano stylings of beard-sporting Sky White cannot go unmentioned as they add that perfect "something" that gives Foxy a sound all there own.
Vocally, this is Eric Nally's break out performance. While his immense talent may have been shielded at times in the raw sound and screaming of Introducing, his remarkable voice shines throughout this record. He sports an incredible range that few singers these possess (without the aid of AutoTune), eliciting flashbacks to the vocal acrobatics of such singers as Freddie Mercury and Steven Tyler (I feel a large Queen influence swimming through the entire album).
The only thing lacking for me in this album is in the lyrics, which I feel at times to be awkward. The general feel of the album doesn't always synch up with the words being sung at the time, but every work is a progression of skills and there are glimpses of an up-and-coming lyricist in this album, which I notice on Second Floor.
All in all this is a great album by a great band. It is definitely not Introducing, but that's alright. Foxy Shazam [the album] is evidence of a band that is growing into their immense talents while still maintaining a sound that makes them unique. And don't worry, all the energy and passion is still there, and there are some definite reversions to the craziness of Introducing. So go and buy the album right now. It's a fantastic purchase that you can listen to over and over again without tiring. And even better, go see them live. While I haven't had the fortune to go to a show yet, my friends who have say you can't experience Foxy until you experience them live.
Besides, how many albums open with dogs barking?
Something New
Old fans of Foxy Shazam will find themselves listening to what would appear to be a whole new band, but don't worry! Its true that they seem to turn down the level of musical chaos with each new album [if you've heard flamingo trigger, their first album, you know what I mean], but I think they have successfully compensated with a more powerful and anthem-driven album that is both catchy and musically engaging. If you miss the craziness, its no problem at all. Just go see them live! Eric Sean Nally is still on stage telling outrageous stories and eating lit cigarettes for your entertainment.
