Album Review

While this album will forever be remembered for spawning the huge hit singles "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride," there's plenty more to appreciate on this stellar release. From "the other single," "Hangin' Around," to the pretty melodies of "Round & Around" and "Autumn," the set collects ten outstanding cuts, played with fervor by Edgar Winter, Chuck Ruff, Dan Hartman, Randy Jo Hobbs, and Ronnie Montrose, along with guest artist/producer Rick Derringer. The "party" feel of "We All Had a Real Good Time" and the singalong "Alta Mira" only add to this already red-hot mix, making They Only Come Out at Night the album Winter will always be remembered for. ~ Michael B. Even a three year old knows what is what

My little girl, who turned three a couple of months ago, heard "Frankenstein" on the radio for the first time as I was taking her to school the other day. As the song ended she said, "Sometimes it is scary, but I like it. Play it again." I explained that it was the radio, and I couldn't play it again until we got home.

As soon as we got home, "Play the scary music again, Pater!" The songs on this alblum are 12 times older than she is, but still connect. Bravo.

Try having this provacative album "art" around your house in 1972 as a teen. David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath
album art comparably weird/commonplace for the period. The late great Dan Hartman ("I Can Dream About You..." fame)
sounds good on "Autumn" --a gentle soulful track. I saw in the early 70's EWG play this "IN CONCERT" via TV stereo FM simulcast--- a real treat.
The album has the traditional full version (FM radio) of Frankenstein- unlike the clipped version on AM radio that leaves out the middle synthesizer
portion. The Drum solo, from what I remember, was multi-talented E. Winter dueling with Chuck Ruff (?) who was on the set, E. Winter on stand-up drums.
I recommend the entire work- don't shortchange yourself with just Frankenstein, or Free Ride. Even non-rockers respected
the musical talent of this group.
