Album Review

The first Persuasions release, recorded live in Los Angeles. The sound is a little two-dimensional, but this recording captures the spirit of joy in live harmonizing, which is the very essence of The Persuasions. Includes great takes on The Temptations's "Don't Look Back" and The Drifters's "Up on the Roof," making manifest the intrinsic connection between '50s doo wop and '60s group singing.

Customer Reviews

I’m persuaded

Frank Zappa fans know of his affinity for do-wop though few are aware of the artists he discovered and careers he helped launch. The Persuasions are one such group. This delightful tribute album is an excellent addition to anyone's Zappa collection. The album covers some of Frank's favorite do-wop compositions with great accuracy as well as some outstanding renditions of his non do-wop work. An a capella cover of Lumpy Gravy is enough reason to purchase this album. The other 14 songs are, well, gravy. Frank would be proud, I'm sure the family trust is proud, and I am proud to own it.

The Persuasions, though, are resolutely a cappella. Their chart successes have been minimal (two fleeting R&B entries in 1974-1975), but they carry forward the tradition without appearing ossified. Airplay will probably always elude...
