iTunes Review

No doubt about it: DC Talk spoke the language of American youth during the ‘90s. The Christian pop/rap/hip-hop trio managed the difficult feat of maintaining their street cred while delivering the Word straight up to their audience. 1992’s Free At Last is probably their definitive creation, a high-energy shake of God-centered musical testimony. Members Toby McKeehan, Michael Tate and Kevin “Max” Smith sling rapid-fire rhymes and lay down the gospel truth with equal abandon, keeping up the fun quotient amidst the serious lessons they impart. The lyrics are mostly in the inspirational vein — “Luv Is a Verb” celebrates the divine Spirit, while “The Hardway” reflects on personal struggles for salvation. “That Kinda Girl” (a purity-for-marriage statement set to a slinky groove) and “Socially Acceptable” (a look at Christians dazzled by secular culture) tackle real-life issues. Complimenting the originals are groove-driven covers of “Jesus Is Just Alright” and “Lean On Me.” Free At Last has kept its freshness and fervor intact over time, even as DC Talk’s members have gone on to successful solo careers.
