iTunes Review

In the late 1960s, the New York-based vocal group the Free Design served up jazzy harmonies, plush lounge music arrangements, and unusual rhythms. Like their California-based contemporaries, the Mamas and the Papas and the Beach Boys, the Free Design could evoke joy and sadness at the same time. The Now Sound Redesigned offers inventive reworkings of Free Design originals by recording artists like Peanut Butter Wolf, Super Furry Animals, Danger Mouse, and Kid Koala. Madlib brings a touch of rowdiness to “Where Do I Go,” adding rough and tumble beats and a variety of just-right wrinkles. Stereolab & the High Llamas, who owe the Free Design a big debt, mash up several cuts for “Harve Daley Hix.” Los Angeles-based producer Nobody contributed “Girls Alone (Nobody Muzak Mix),” which rides a jagged groove as sweet voices and woodwinds weave a dreamy atmosphere. Caribou’s “Dorian Benediction,” one of the more ethereal tracks here, features churchy organ, fluttering harp, and vocal chants before things head East as ritualistic bells and Asian flute samples create a psych-folk vibe. It’s a perfect ending to a great tribute.

REFRESHING!! Keep pushing the boundaries!!

If industry-made genres don't matter to you and you just love all kinds of good music, grab this and the version with the originals! I have been a huge fan of Stereolab, Sam Prekop, The Sea & Cake, The High Llamas for years. Its great to finally see where some of their inspiration comes from. There is one particular reviewer on this page and this 'expert' says "Please don't tell me your're gonna buy this". Upon checking all his reviews, he hates everything 90% of what he reviews. Hmmmmm. Must be a......musician?hahahha. ENJOY!!!!!

Interesting mix.

This album does a great job of being eclectic, fresh and in left field.

In the Vein of Handsome Boy Modeling School

Great release, reminds me of some Nu Spirit Helinski, DJ Cam, and Handsome Modeling Boy School, stuff except its better executed. Great compilation with a cohesive feel, Some standouts include. Dj Danger Mouse & Murs collaborative effort "To A Black Boy" and Madlib's "Where Do I Go." This is a cd you put on to just catch a certain vibe, and it does it very well, one of the few downfalls to me is the flop "2002 - A Hit Song" however some may actually enjoy it its not for me. Ignore any review that simply downs this release for its genre, the genre is obviously not for everyone but its a good soundtrack to cruise the high way too. Peace --
