iTunes Review

This isn’t a Beach Boys tribute. It’s more like a deliberate attempt to be the Beach Boys around the time they were moving away from their Chuck Berry-derived surf-rock, and exploring where their expert feel for harmony and leader Brian Wilson’s awakening as one of the 1960s most adventurous and successful songwriters could take them. If someone didn’t tell you this is actually an ensemble of twenty-somethings from Charleston, South Carolina, you’d assume this is a collection of never before released Beach Boys tracks, which raises odd critical issues. In terms of pure artistry, this is practically tracing. But in terms of pleasure, if you enjoy The Beach Boys circa Pet Sounds (which continues to appear on all-time favorites lists the world over, suggesting plenty of people do), then there’s no reason not to enjoy this note-perfect replication. Truth told, the music is retro and gorgeous. “Forever,” “Don’t Forget the Sun,” “Do You Love Me?” are pure fun, from the high-end falsettos and the explosive harmonies to the perfect pummel of the drums. These Beach Boys re-enactors (they also claim other influences, like ELO) belong in a category all their own.

The Sounds of Summer

The Explorers Club have one amazing record here. In fact, Brian Wilson himself gave it two thumbs up. Officially Beach Boys endorsed. Need I say more?

So, here's the deal as I see it...

I think this is a BRILLIANT debut album. I don't care about the whole "ewww... it sounds like a ripoff of the Beach Boys." Here are the facts. These kids are NOT The Rutles. These kids are in their mid-20s and come from Charleston, SC. They took music they loved and crafted their own songs, and created a body of work that recreates EVERYTHING I love about music from that era... AND, it's their first crack at this thing called recording. I look at the people I have grown to love and respect in this industry (Todd Rundgren, Ben Folds, Beck, Barenaked Ladies and countless others,) and harken back to their debut albums and influences, and this record and these guys stand up to every one of them. The Explorers Club, and Jason Brewer in particular, have yet to tell their whole story, but this is a darned impressive first chapter. Give them time to breathe, evolve and create. If a debut release could come out sounding this strong, the future is bright. I'm already chomping at the bit for album two... and three... and beyond. Now, if only the business itself would nurture and support talent, we'd be assured of albums two, three and beyond. If you don't buy this one, who knows...

making Art Laboe proud

There was a time when music actually evoked an overwhelming feeling of good times. 50's Doo-Wop, 60's Rock, and 70's California breezes to boot. The Explorers Club proudly wear their influences on thier sleeves, but who doesn't. They've handcrafted a beautiful Soundtrack to Your Current Life and cruising up and down PCH is a reality once again. Top Down, Waves Crashing beneath the pier and seagulls pearched on Palms. If this sublime escapism doesnt sound appealing...then time to head back to the Top 40 charts where its been desecrated for the last 30+ years. The Explorers Club may not sell a million albums, but at least theyve released a timeless album that you wont have a single regret purchasing. There are plenty of sounds injected in this record that harken the days of El Monte, Del-Fi, Whittier Blvd, Hawthorne, Motown and So Cal. hot rodding down at Bobs Big Boy. This is the Feel Good Hit of the Summer and the next 1,000 Summers and beyond

Biography

Formed: 2005 in Charleston, SC

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

It would be easy to dismiss the six-piece Charleston, South Carolina-based the Explorers Club as a 21st century Beach Boys clone except the band is just so darn good at channeling that vintage California sound that they somehow end up sounding refreshing and vital because of it. Led by singer, songwriter, arranger, guitarist, and pianist Jason Brewer, the band also includes James Faust on guitar, piano, and harmonica, Wally Reddington on bass, Dave Ellis on 12-string guitar and accordion and Neil...
