Album Review

Composer James Newton Howard's score for director Joe Roth's urban thriller Freedomland is thick with the melodic and atmospheric soundscapes that have become his forte (King Kong, Sixth Sense). Soft, contemplative piano notes are overtaken by seas of gritty industrial beats and electric guitars, keyboards loop themselves around desperate flashes of chilly electronica, and elegiac string sections melt into the facades of the crumbling buildings that inhabit this mediocre Samuel L. Jackson/Julianne Moore thriller.

Best trax: at least two

The 30-sec teasers here can mislead you and just don't do justice on several tracks. While watching the film, tho', the music grabbed me right away and I paid attention to it. These 2 I've bot so far: #10) "Burning" has the most awesome simul-drum percusion mix(!) and 7) Freedomland... just speaks to me somehow.

To: Route 66 who asked??

I didn't see the movie this soundtrack is from but I did sample the each song herein and you did ask why should you buy and download?...Well, if you don't like relaxing intense music that seems to me it is telling a story rather of what the movie would be like, you shouldn't waste your money. There is so much to choose from all the time in iTunes even for an old codger like me that I know you can score with something you truly will like forever. For myself I am going to give this set a three stars rating and purchase the music. Good luck on Route 66, I used to live on Route 66 and it was a 'gas.'

A Great Artist

It's unfortunate though that his best work (THAT CARRIES HIS NAME) James Newton Howard and Friends does not appear on ITUNES. I first heard this album in the late 70's early 80's and TO THIS DAY people are blown away at this stuff and want to know who it is. I've made the suggenstion that ITUNES carrie this album to no avail.

Pianist, producer, and composer James Newton-Howard scored over 60 films beginning in the mid-'80s, including The Fugitive, Space Jam, The Prince of Tides, Pretty Woman, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Waterworld. Newton-Howard began taking classical piano lessons at the age of four, playing on a piano owned by his grandmother, who was the Pittsburgh Symphony's concertmaster and violinist during the 1930s and '40s.
