Album Review
Freezepop's debut record is '80s kitsch through and through — and what would you expect from a band who plays all of their music on a Yamaha QY70 synthesizer? While some may accuse this album — and more specifically, the lack of guitar, bass, and drums — of being a little flat, Forever is really half art project, half fun. These kids are in their early to mid-twenties, so they were part of the first generation to grow up with the original synth poppers (Human League, Erasure) as part of their lexicon. At the same time, they realize that those same acts were made fun of for the better part of the '90s and that college rock, as it was known in 2001, was not heavy on synthesizers except for those pumping out 240 beats per minute. So Forever, then, mixes a distinctly goofy indie pop sensibility (a lot like Bis) with those synthesizers. It means that Freezepop turns out songs about cloning your crush or having a crush on Tracey Gold, and those types of geeky '80s references are exactly what will appeal to the college crowd who hears this album. Supposedly the Other Sean T. Drinkwater — who is more or less the mastermind behind at least the sound of both Freezepop and Lifestyle — likes to play down his '80s connections for fear of looking like a novelty. Lord only knows why: Forever is evidence that if you've got it, flaunt it, baby.
Customer Reviews
You never forget your first!
Even after millions of spins on my stereo, iPod, and every other musical bit of equipment I own, this album never ceases to impress. My first f-pop songs, "Science Genius Girl" and "T DJ," which I downloaded off their website while waiting for my first CD to arrive, remain "fancy ultra-fresh." Although there are many better songs on the album, they still remain highlights worth listening to. The delectable "Tracey Gold" and the self-tribute "Freezepop Forever," along with the soothingly romantic "Plastic Stars" light up this album like fireworks bursting over Helsinki during the WW2 blackouts. Filling in the spaces between are many other memorable tracks, including the synth-rock call to action "Get Ready 2 Rokk" and the snazzy bouncing beats of "Robotron 2000" (with its obvious tribute to some rather well-known 80s lyrics). Add the sultry "Tender Lies" and the floaty "Tenisu No Boifurendo" (which actually helped me pass a Japanese quiz on time words once), and you have a solid 5-star album, no problem. The only song on this whole album that I find repugnant is the sickeningly saccharine "Summerboy," with its uninspired beat and repetitive, "lo-fi" (in a bad way) vocals. However, it's cheaper to buy the whole album than to buy all the other tracks and leave this one out, so you might as well just get the whole thing and see for yourself whether "Summerboy" is bad or not. If you think about it, you're almost getting paid to take it!
Myspace Song
I have a myspace and Freeze Pop once had a myspace and they had a version of BOOM BOOM and I liked it a lot and unfortunatly nobody could downlode it. and Freeze Pop Deleted there myspace and now its lost forever. I wish they could make BOOM BOOM availiable on iTunes, because Freeze Pop really ROCKS!
Yum.
When I first heard a few of Freezepop's songs, I wrote them off as boring and sounding exactly the same. Now, however, they are constantly playing on my iPod and I can be heard humming them while doing day-to-day acctivities. They are most definetly worth the buy.
