Here, the MMW direction and loyalties become very clear; they're possessed and driven by the fatback funk and instruments of an earlier generation. John Medeski becomes one of the wave of keyboardists in the '90s who started dragging wonderful old Wurlitzer electric pianos, Hohner clavinets, Hammond organs, wah-wah pedals, and other devices out of the mothballs, and used them almost as quasi-percussion instruments at times. Chris Wood remains resolutely on standup bass, playing with a great feeling for Billy Martin's supremely funky drumming. Some of the results harken back to Miles Davis' jungle bands of the mid-'70s, picking up on the atonality and crosstalk over the JB's/Sly Stone beat ("We're So Happy"). itunes!!!! Fix your mistake!!!
!!!! ITUNES, FIX THIS MISTAKE...This album does not file with the rest of MMW's albums. I'm guessing it's because the commas are missing from the bands name!!!!
This, to me is Medeski, Martin, and Wood's finest effort. It's a melodic story from beginning to end and paints quite a wonderful portrait of everything they are capable of. The zany insanity of drums on "House Mop" and "We're so Happy", their soft, epic, patient, abstraction of "Friday Afternoon in the Universe", and my personal favorite "Last Chance to Dance Trance (Perhaps)" which, for me paints a vision of a rainy sunday afternoon. Clocking in at just under 8 minutes, this song takes it's time to build to some incredibly lyrical soloing on piano, organ, bass, and drums. Even the piano frenzy of "Chinoiserie" flows with what seems to be, no effort.
There is a blueprint here (or lack there of) that seems to be missing in a lot of their other albums. Each song represents a certain theme and melody that you don't quite find in other MMW recordings. In my opinion, the next closest album would be It's a Jungle in Here, but there is still a distance between the two. And unfortunately, i don't find the same level of magic in any of their other albums. Whether it's the predicable songs of Shack-Man or the muddy even pace of Combustication, something unlike any other is represented here and should not be missed. Not to say that anything they've recorded is below average. If anything, MMW sails consistently high above par.
