Album Review

Primus' eccentric, dissonant blend of avant-rock, funk, punk, and thrash has inspired comparisons to everyone from Frank Zappa to Devo to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But whatever comparison is made, the fact is that this trio has created strikingly original music. Frizzle Fry is sometimes a bit too self-indulgent for its own good, but in general, Les Claypool's willingness to experiment and his risk-taking nature come through the most. "Too Many Puppies," "To Defy the Laws of Tradition," and "Mr. Knowitall" are among the nutty, weird treasures that helped establish Primus as alternative rock heroes and make Frizzle Fry the classic that it is. [The 2002 Prawn Song reissue adds a medley of the Residents' "Hello Skinny" and "Constantinople" as a bonus track.]

It's back!

Great to see iTunes finally wised up and re-added Frizzle Fry to their library. This album should be in every Primus fan's collection. Some of the highlights include Too Many Puppies, Mr. Knowitall, John the Fisherman, Pudding Time, and Harold of the Rocks. This remaster also includes the double Residents cover Hello Skinny/Constantinople which is a must have for any Residents fan.

The Best Primus Album Out There!

This is a classic! It originally came out in 1990. The best songs are laws of tradition, puppies, knowitall, frizzle fry, fisherman, pudding time, and Harold. Also try groundhog's day and spegetti western. Cannot wait for their new album!

Stellar!!

This easily the best Primus album, it is surely their heaviest material, it always feels fresh, the band members are in complete harmony with one another, plus Les Claypool gives his best vocal performance his lyrics weren't nonsense yet like later albums.
it still surprises me that this album was released in 1990, it sounds unlike anything else from that time.

Biography

Formed: 1986 in San Francisco, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Primus is all about Les Claypool; there isn't a moment on any of their records where his bass isn't the main focal point of the music, with his vocals acting as a bizarre side-show. Which isn't to deny guitarist Larry LaLonde or drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander any credit; no drummer could weave in and around Claypool's convoluted patterns as effortlessly as Alexander, and few guitarists would willingly push the spotlight away, like LaLonde does, just to can produce a never-ending spiral of avant-noise....
