Album Review

Silverchair's debut album, Frogstomp, faithfully follows the alternative rock tradition of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, which means that the group of Australian teenagers winds up sounding not like their idols, but like Stone Temple Pilots and Bush. For their age, their instrumental capabilities are quite impressive, as the guitars and vocals growl with the force of rockers in their early 20s. At the same time, their songwriting abilities aren't as strong, and they are never able to break away from the standard grunge formula. Nevertheless, the record does deliver a collection of songs replicating the thunder of "Tomorrow."

best album for NON fans of modern alt.

I love this album but I honestly cant say Im too impressed by their new stuff at all. Im not a big fan of most new alternative rock period, since it consists of watered down, whiny, teenage boys singing songs, like My Chemical Romance, or dare I say it the Jonas brothers. So no, I honestly have to say this was their only good album in my opinion, and none of the others seem to even come close to matching this level of brilliance. I've listened to their other albums and really none of them capture the essence of this raw guitar and belting of lyrics, yet managing to keep it guinine and true at the same time. So yes as far as their new music, well, its not my cup of tea. I love the grunge sound, and thats my taste in rock.

Questionable but lovable

Okay, so here's the deal with Silverchair. They are amazing. They rock HARD! They also imitate Nirvana and Pearl Jam PERFECTLY (Israel's Son? I thought I was listening to the opening of Even Flow by PJ!). This could be seen as a slight problem. Now, I'm just speaking to the band that they were in '95 (my birth year), and as a trio of fifteen year olds, they kicked ultimate a*s. So they're good, but yes, definitely confused. On Frogstomp their sound is unbeatable, one you can't find in any other of their albums. So I'll say this again: Yes, they are very good. But on their own terms. On the rest of Seattle Rock's terms, they are just little copycats. I would still get this CD--I can't get enough of Tomorrow! If you're into the music, definitely buy it. If you're more into originality, and like bands that jump out... skip this one. Go listen to RATM or AIC (if you don't already have 'em). Oh yeah, and check out Corrosion of Conformity--I have my money on their CD Blind as a must-have for your '90s grunge collection. :)

This album, to me, sounds very Pearl Jam influenced. If you listen to the verse of Even Flow and then Israel's Son you will see what i mean...

Silverchair quickly rose to international stardom in 1995 by mining a mix of Nirvana and Pearl Jam on their debut album, Frogstomp. Buoyed by the angst-ridden single "Tomorrow," Frogstomp topped the Australian charts and cracked the Top Ten in America, making Silverchair the first Australian act since...
