Songs of a dying man

When you listen to this album knowing that he died immediately after recording it (and I mean, literally the day after), you understand that this is the music of a dying man - of someone who grew bitter and tired with life. If you're one of the fans who thinks he was murdered (the coroner never officially declared his death a suicide) it's hard to believe he didn't do it himself after listening to this album. When you hear lyrics such as "Give me one good reason not to do it" and "I can't prepare for death anymore than I already have" it seems completely obvious that he was ready to die. There are some songs like "Little One" where his voice sounds so frail and weak, it sounds as if he's on his deathbead, searching for a last bit of pleasure before exiting this cold world. A truly tragic and intimate album, this is as sincere and as heartbreaking as music can get.

This album is nothing short of sublime. It's a beautifully woven tapestry of human emotion. Sad, reflective, gentle, and brutally honest. I've heard it described as depressing, but only by those who don't connect with it. For those who can identify with Smith's introspection on a deeper level it's cathartic. It allows you to explore your heaviest emotions from the viewpoint of someone who can put them into words in a way you never could. An absolute must have.

The celebrated folk-punk singer/songwriter Elliott Smith rose from indie obscurity to mainstream success in 1997 on the strength of "Miss Misery," his Academy Award-nominated song from the film Good Will Hunting. A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later becoming a fixture of the city's thriving music scene. As a member of the band Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issuing his first solo effort Roman Candle on the tiny Cavity Search...
