The Best Is Yet To Come

Sam Fisher is in the shortest way possible one of the most diverse musicians Ive had the pleasure to work with. He not only taught me everything I know, but has been my best friend. Some great new songs here!

The music on this album is great, well-produced, and diverse, but the main reason you should get it is that there are some awesome new songs that will get in your head and have you thinking some really good thoughts about Who God Is.

A Familiar Reinvention

Sam Fisher is back after a hiatus, and he has a lot to say.

If "People Living" saw Fisher reinvent himself from a soul-inspired rock frontman into a rock-inspired soul artist, "From Age to Age" represents another evolution both musically and thematically.

First, the elephant in the room: this is an unabashed praise and worship project, and at this it excels. Writing from the other side of marriage, fatherhood, and several years of deeply investigating his personal faith and spirituality, Fisher's new lyrics are both reflective and optimistic, a departure from the wistful ballads and social anthems to which fans of "People Living" may be accustomed. That said, Fisher's sophomore studio release showcases mature songwriting and melodies that will still have you rolling down the car windows and turning up the volume.

Musically, the new record settles somewhere between Fisher's "rock" sound and the soul/funk flavor of "People Living," while still bringing out a side of his music that feels refreshingly original and unexplored. "Cannons" is a driving rock number with haunting interludes, and the title track would be right at home among the work of classical worship mainstays such as Petra. A collaboration with Atlanta-based independent singer-songwriter Emily Lynch, "Jesus, Sun of Righteousness" is a foray into traditional hymn-making that may at first seem out of place, until considered as part of the album's overall exploratory mission.

If less-religious fans are concerned that they might be alienated by Sam's first Contemporary Christian project, rest assured; the record doesn't preach or lecture. What it does - and does well - is present both questions and answers from Fisher's own spiritual introspection and development, while leaving plenty of room for his trademark energetic musicianship to shine through.
