Album Review

Comedian Todd Barry isn't so much tortured as terminally ticked. His delivery is quiet, laid-back, kinda creepy, and comes with plenty of acid, but on his third album that uneasy feeling comes on less often than before. Here, Barry communicates and connects with his audience like a true pro. Mundane everyday this-and-that like shopping at Trader Joe's or Old Navy are now hot topics, and Barry's ability to improvise has grown, putting him and the widely appreciative audience captured here in tune. Thanks to the improved pacing of the unsettling and strange material, where to laugh is all the more obvious, pointing him in the direction of Steven Wright when it always seemed he could have gone Andy Kaufman. His routine doesn't dwell on any topic for too long and he makes sharp right turns with abandon. Still, when he goes from discussing his own CDs to imagining Bruce Springsteen getting stood up right before dreaming aloud about running into George W. Bush at party, it's a surprisingly smooth ride. Above it all, Barry is sharp, funny, and able to point out the absurd things in life most everyone else skips over. His forever beaten down and bitter attitude makes him an acquired taste, but this is his strongest work yet so if you don't like From Heaven than you just don't like Todd Barry.

Todd is King!

Todd is King! Todd is King!

One of my favorites

I listen to a LOT of stand up comedy and Todd is probably the one I get the most concictent laughs re-listening to the albums. He hasa very distinct delivery and his pop-culture refferences and hipster style are right up my alley. If you're a scene kid or a hipster or just a pop-culture junkie you'll love this. If you like blue collar comedy or comics who talk about how crappy airplane food is then go away. Forever.

Todd Barry is a complete and total genius. This album had me crying hysterically with laughter.

I never write reviews for anything, so for me to get out of my armchair, wipe the PB&J sandwich crumbs off my belly, empty the portable urinal jug I keep next to my armchair, and sit in front of my computer with nothing else to do but write to an audience who probably has no interest in my opinion, ought to give you some indication of how much I respect Mr. Todd Barry. I kid you not when I say that this is one of the most hilarious comedy albums I've ever heard. I've listened to it at least 10 times so far and I still laugh. I don't do so because I'm one of those boneheads who likes to quote other people's funny lines or observations to friends, strangers, or scary people on the bus, but because I am a fan of hilarity (a quote from another funny comedian - Mr. Paul F. Tompkins - note the irony of what I just did, people). Todd Barry is a complete and total genius. This album had me crying hysterically with laughter. All of his albums are brilliant, and this was another fantastic set. I'm really impressed with the fact that he comes up with so much new material and that it's always so polished. If he ever came to Phoenix to perform I'd see him in person, but until that day I will listen to his three albums (this one especially) and smile. Don't wonder if you should buy this. Trust me. Just do it.

Finding it hard to apply his B.A. in English to his previous jobs — VD clinic clerk and drummer — the deadpan, sometimes doe-eyed Todd Barry accepted his fate and turned to standup comedy in 1987. Bronx born and bred, Barry grew up a fan of Steve Martin, George Carlin, and Andy Kaufman. After spending years touring the comedy clubs, a 1998 Jury Award for Best Stand Up Comic at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen welcomed him to the big leagues. After an April 1999 appearance on Late...
