iTunes Review

Far from a sophomore slump, the second album by Chicago’s Fall Out Boy finds the band massaging the post-hardcore, emo-pop sound of their debut, Take This to Your Grave, with a more expansive and confident sonic palette. Songwriter and bassist Pete Wentz take more liberties with language and dark humor, riffing both for fun and effect, and Patrick Stump’s razor sharp guitars and fervent vocals are stronger and more efficient. Having fun with lyrics like, “I don't blame you for being you / But you can't blame me for hating it” and “We’re the therapists pumping through your speakers / Delivering just what you need,” Stump instinctively wraps both his voice and his guitar around the hooks, weaving them into an inseparable whole, and yet he knows when to slow things up and let them flow or breathe in a more organic and natural fit. His modest, low-key vocals on “I’ve Got a Dark Alley” is a risk that pays off, and the melodic swoops and slides on “Sophomore Slump” are just plain fun. The crunchy guitars on “Our Lawyer Made Us” and the urgent, punkish pace of  “Dance Dance” are throwbacks to the band’s harder days... and don’t the kids just love it!

Certainly Not a Sophomore Slump... One of the Finest Albums of the Year

After such a stellar album as "Take This to Your Grave," it seems that the members of Fall Out Boy would really have to pour their hearts out to match the previous album's brilliance. And so they did with "From Under the Cork Tree," turning out not only catchier melodies, but also adding a bit of maturity to their seemingly teen-angst-laden lyrics. The album will make you laugh, with its hilariously lengthy song titles, but will also hit you where it hurts, as its emotional impact has possibly heightened since the band's previous efforts. You'd have to be living under a rock somewhere if you haven't heard "Sugar, We're Goin Down." However, don't allow this song to speak for the entire album. Musically and lyrically speaking, "Sugar" has its own shining moments, but I believe it to be one of the album's weaker tracks. And calling an amazing song like that a "weaker" track is really, really something. The album starts off with a catchy little ditty regarding their rise to fame, a theme often referenced throughout the album. It's obvious that we've got a little variation in subject matter here, compared to the last album, where EVERY song was about heartbreak. The song is lighthearted on the surface, save the morbid but wonderful line "The ribbon on my wrist says do not open before Christmas." "Of All the Gin Joints in All the World" is actually happy, amazingly enough. Well, happy for a Fall Out Boy song, anyway. Themes of shattered self-esteem and timidity prevail, but the song is brilliantly catchy, and the "oh oh"s just dare you to sing along. "Dance, Dance," deemed the band's next single, is ridiculously fun, and the band maintains its ability to sound so completely happy while singing about something so completely heart-wrenching. "7-Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen)" holds a brilliant play-on-words just in the title. This is by far the catchiest song on the entire album, starting off with a guitar rift from the classic band referenced in the title. "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me" is also fun and bouncy, but holds a good deal of that surprising Fall Out Boy wisdom with lines like "I can't blame you for being you, but you can't blame me for hating it." Happy, peppy songs with heartbreaking lyrics - this is what Fall Out Boy's all about, people. Perhaps it's a bit of personal bias, as this album seemed to hit me right after a painful breakup. However, the most poignant song of the album, for me, remains "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got was this Stupid Song Written About Me." Sure, the title's a mouthful, and it seems humorous enough. However, the lyrics are darker than those of the rest of the album, in my opinion, and they seem to grasp perfectly the emotional impact of being rent from someone you truly, desperately want. My favorite bit - "They call kids like us vicious and carved out of stone/but for what we've become, we just feel more alone/always weigh what I've got against what I left/so progress repot: I am missing you to death." Bitter, angry, heartbroken, and vulnerable. A piece of absolute musical perfection. Even the tracks I haven't mentioned are noteworthy, especially the ending track, "XO." Every single song on this album is brimming with pain and emotion. And Fall Out Boy makes that pain palpable to us, perfectly conveying the impact of heartbreak. The album is devastatingly depressing, yet deceptively chipper all at once. It is a paradox of sounds and themes, and is nothing short of a musical masterpiece.

It's Fall out boy, what can I say?

I have loved fall out boy forever, and this is an awesome album! It makes me want to scream and speed dial that one person, and then laugh through the steam pouring out of my ears, and the tears. I have been into fall out boy, but this... this is as good as all the others! Which is amazing. Track1.Our Lawyers made us change the name of this song so we wudn't get sued; a good song about moochers, and money, i think. Decide for yourself, its morals. Track2. Of all the gin Joints in The World: A good song, with its great chords, and guitar Track3.Dance, Dance: A light hearted song that makes me do air guitar and smile, it reminds me of black paint being splattered all over, its just so.... exciting, and tremendous! Track4: Sugar Were Going Down: AHH, everyone has heard this song!!! and it proves to be awesome enough for everyone to sing along, and bob their head too! It is extreme, and fun, and makes me smile and flip me hair! Track5. Nobody puts Baby in the corner: Its a good song, not as interesting of a title as the others! Track6. I've got a dark Alley and a Bad Idea that says You shud shut your mouth: It isn't as much like Fall out Boy as the others, but its still theres! Thus rocking! Track7. 7minutes in Heaven: Ahh it reminds me of that one boy u first kiss, have fireworks explode in your mouth, and have ur heart broke by him never doing nething more than that night! Track8. Sophmore Slump or Comeback of the Year: I ADORE IT! Its about growing up, and how secrets arn't meant to be told, but nothing ever works out the way its meant to be! Aw, Wise Philosphy Track9. Champagne for my real Friends, Real Pain for my sham friends: ITs another song about moochers, and the real world. Love it ( like the others) Track10. I slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy, and all i got was this song written about me: Love it! It is dark, and talks about that one person who lied, and whos cheap perfume was so fitting! Track11. A Little less Sixteen Candles, a Little more Touch Me: Ah its catchy yet, talks about how much YOU can screw up, turning the tables?!!! Track12: Get Busy Living or Get busy dying: Love the title, love the song! Its very deep, and more dark Track13. XO: A great closing to a Great album! i adore this song, and personally its one of my favorite. Its about how you can never trust your conscience. I highly suggest this album, and promise you'll be addicted to Fall Out Boy after hearing it! Drive to best buy in your pjs, and fall a sleep to fall out boy! End your day and start the next!
