iTunes Review
Hans Zimmer has written scores for more than a hundred movies, including Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy, Thelma and Louise, The Lion King, and Gladiator. (One of his best scores to date is the brooding music he composed for Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line.) Ron Howard’s 2008 feature Frost/ Nixon focuses on the story centered around the famous 1977 series of television interviews that talk show host David Frost did with ex-President Richard Nixon three years after the Watergate scandal. Clock-like rhythms add urgency to several of the tracks, including “Watergate,” “The Numbers,” and “Pardon the Phlebitis.” Minimalism colors “Hello, Good Evening and Welcome,” which, by turns, conveys a sense of excitement and mystery. The somber “Status” opens with a handful of piano notes and a bed of brooding strings, but insistent marimba and chugging fiddles appear later. “Beverly Hilton” is marked by gamelan-like percussion and assertive, pop-flavored string writing, while “Frost Despondent” features glassy strings hovering above piano. The album closes with the ten-minute-long “First Ideas,” a quiet piece nicely shaded with muted drama.
Customer Reviews
Wow. Zimmer is on a roll...
Just got out the film (which, by the way is Mr. Howard's best in years), and immediately logged on to get the score. Zimmer, lately, has gotten away from his huge bombastic scores and into a new and fascinating area in his career - taking on vastly varied projects and rather than bringing huge themes, using more personal touches. This is not to take anything from his huge library of incredible work... Just to say that I'm really liking his last few scores more than ever before. With "The Holiday," "The Dark Knight" (which features sort of the anti-theme) and now "Frost/Nixon," I feel he is doing some of his most poignant and thoughtful works. "Frost/Nixon" immediately places itself among the best of hs scores.
An interesting and intricate score
I love this new, more subtle Zimmer! It's not at all what you'd expect: definitely on the restrained side. All the cues are very listenable, so I'd just grab the full album download.
Feather In The Cap
Sounds like American Beauty.....nonsense. I have been listening to Thomas and Hans for 15+ years - nothing similar, not even here. Both composers stand on their own greatly. This is a terrific departure for Hans. Frankly, the instrumentation in a lot of places reminds me of The Good Shepard, some stuff by Mychael Danna and some of The Weather Man. Nonetheless, a terrific and fresh listening experience that I'll bet compliments the movie perfectly. Can't wait to see it. Congrats Hans and, for that matter, Ron Howard.
