Album Review

MCA Special Products' Funk #49 is a good sampling of the James Gang's classic years with Joe Walsh. Even though it is just a budget-priced collection — and thereby falls prey to all the slapdash production of its ilk (particularly in the hideous, bumblebee-colored cover) — it's actually an excellent cross-section of the band's work, containing the great majority of the trio's best tracks of the era, including "Midnight Man," "Yadig?," "There I Go Again," "Again," "Walk Away," "Funk #48" and "Funk #49."

This is an album I had when I was a teenager, and I loved it. And it still sounds GREAT! These guys rocked, and they had a sense of humor. Saying that, there's one thing missing from this version; at the end of each side of the vinyl (the last track where the needle would fall and click click click) these guys recorded something. At the end of side 1 they said"turn me over, turn me over, turn me over" and at the end of side 2 they said "play me again, play me again, play me again". And I miss that for some weird reason.

Great song. Great album. Shows a side of Joe Walsh most people dont often hear. Also it captures the sound of the era pretty well. Its worth the price.

Years Active: '60s, '70s

With the emergence of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience during the late '60s, the path was cleared for other hard-rockin' "trios." Arguably, the finest to emerge from the subsequent American crop was the James Gang. Despite penning a few of classic rock radio's most enduring songs, the James Gang...
