Album Review
Although Kool & the Gang became pop superstars in the 1980s on the strength of J.T. Taylor's silky voice and several catchy arrangements, R&B fans regard their true glory days as the 1970s. The New Jersey-based ensemble patented a jazz-tinged funk approach keyed by Robert "Kool" Bell's basslines, red-hot horn lines, chunky keyboards and guitar riffs, and functional vocals. Although they seldom ventured beyond the R&B charts during this era, their music had far more bite than their later pop hits. These 16 cuts pay homage to Kool & the Gang's funk roots, and should be a revelation to those who only know them as the light ensemble behind J.T. Taylor.

The Real Deal
The reviewer aaaaaaa doesn't know what he's talking about and the iTUNES review is not for this volume. If you're curious about the incarnation of Kool & The Gang that existed before their wimpy post 'Ladies Night' phase, this is the compilation you need (The Best of Kool & The Gang 1969-1976). It's a motherload of hard, raunchy, heavily sampled top-tier funk from arguably the greatest band in the genre.
when everything was Kool ...and the Gang
This collection was before J.T. Taylor's arrival, during the funky days and includes the live version of Summer Madness which is a longer and better version.
Their best early stuff
I wish it had their hit single, " Kool & the Gang".
