iTunes Review

Liz Phair has always loved to create controversy. She knows how easy it is to do. Use words that don’t belong in primetime, embrace your sexuality, use it for fun or as a weapon and the press either go gaga or furious. Contrary to some critical opinion, Liz Phair has been making fun, fine albums all along. Yes, she’s guilty of leaving the indie-rock world that gave her a start for a world of commercial pressures and trendy producers. But it’s not a crime to evolve in the pop world of your choice. Funstyle is released on her own label and is one weird, kooky album, filled with hilarious moments where she kicks out her jams in a variety of ways. “Bollywood” is bizarre soccer-mom rapping, with lots of electronic touches. “You Should Know Me” and “Miss September” are back to her melodic self with lyrics that never flinch. “Beat Is Up” is a great funk number with a self-parody in the middle that’s worth its price of admission. “U Hate It” is a quirky pastiche that seems to mock her own status in the music world — and the music world itself.

In a single word: Brilliant!

I have no doubt in my mind that a lot of people are going to hate this album. It's Liz Phair, after all, and people love to hate her. It doesn't matter what the woman does, people will always find a reason to tear whatever she releases apart. And those people will be seriously missing out this time around because "Funstyle" is brilliant. I'll admit, at first I didn't know what to think of it. It scared and confused me and made me wonder if, perhaps, Liz had, indeed, lost her mind. But after a few listens I realized that it was a smart, scathing (and dead-on) critique of the music industry with a few really awesome rock songs sprinkled in for good measure. She goes to entirely new artistic levels with songs like "Oh, Bangladesh," "Bang! Bang!" and "And He Slayed Her." "You Should Know Me" and "Satisfied" are also very solid tracks, as is "Miss September." Honestly, I've loved every album Liz has ever put out. Her early material is great. Her self-titled album is an amazing concept album and contains some of her smartest writing to date. (Haters of that album don't have brains. Sorry, but it's true.) "Somebody's Miracle," while my least favorite of her albums, still had some great songs on it. "Funstyle" is a nice addition to her repertoire. I just hope people can judge the album on ITS terms and not on their own. If they can do that, they might actually realize that Liz Phair has still got it going on.

Phair's 'Funstyle' is aptly titled

For Phair’s fans that date past her eponymous album, Funstyle will be undoubtedly polarizing, but ultimately rewarding as it clearly demonstrates Phair’s refusal to be pigeonholed. This is a record without the pre-planned blueprint normally found on traditional albums – this is the equivalent of a scribbled page in a child’s coloring book. Sure, it’s a mess, but it’s a whole lotta fun.

Old fan likes it

I've been a big fan of Liz Phair since Exile in Guyville, and even though I haven't liked all her stuff, I certainly like this one. Good job.

Biography

Born: April 17, 1967 in New Haven, CT

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Growing out of the American underground of the late '80s, Liz Phair fused lo-fi indie rock production techniques with the sensibility and structure of classic singer/songwriters. Exile in Guyville, her gold-selling debut album, was enthusiastically praised upon its 1993 release, and spawned a rash of imitators during the following years, particularly American female singer/songwriters. For her part, Phair wasn't able to fully break into the mainstream, even with the support of the press and MTV....
