Sexy, steely, dark and seductive
Dougan's lyrics transmute potentially pedestrian, petty or self-pitying emotions into powerful testimonies of human suffering and ultimate spiritual victory.... righteous indignation ('Left Me for Dead', 'Furious Angels'), loss ('Nothing at All'), envy and jealousy ('Born Yesterday')... the man has clearly been through some major moments, honey---and came out of them with enviable understanding and depth. P.S., by the way.... one CANNOT listen to this music in a car and drive under 120 mph--not possible, sorry, consider yourself warned.
I am Not Alone!
Finally, I am not alone in thinking Rob Dougan is a great artist. I love his gravely voice over the string and electronic arrangments, a great dicotomy that meshes well. His songs shift towards the sad side but aren't depressing. His song style is crafted to let the listener know he takes his trade seriously, making each effort unique. He can carry you from big orchestral peices to just him and a piano, His vocals bleed of emotion and passion, I seem to hear something new everytime I listen. a Great album.
Brilliant and disturbing all at once--the work of a genius
I originally bought "There's Only Me," a plaintive ballad with electronic undercurrents that is familiar to anyone who has resigned themselves to going through life alone. Then, however, I discovered the other complexities of the album: the title track "Furious Angels" is a furiously beautiful expression of rage and love with powerful lyrics; "One and the Same," is a beautiful work with an orchestral accompaniment, contrasting with the heavier songs on the album such as "Speed Me Towards Death" or "I'm Not Driving Anymore." If you had the chance to read liner notes or Rob Dougan's website, you'll know that he spent several years assembling this album--and it shows, because the music is rich, layered, accomplished, and very diverse. Just don't let the shotgun through the cover photo disturb you too much, and if you listen to the whole album do it on a bright sunny day when you are feeling upbeat--not all of the album is positive, despite the beauty of the music.
