Album Review

Released in conjunction with Argument, Furniture is a three-song EP putting together older tracks that had yet to be put on disc. Running with similar consistency to the 3 Songs EP that preceded Repeater, these older songs still sound fresh. "Furniture," with its trademark Ian MacKaye call-response vocal, would have been quite comfortable on either of the first two EPs. The Guy Picciotto-led "Hello Morning" is reminiscent of "Break-In," while the driving instrumental second track, "Number 5," is scorching. Thankfully kept separate from the very different Argument, this should be heard by any Fugazi fan, no matter what time of the band they consider the best.

Worth Every Penny

This CD-EP from Fugazi is simply amazing. Although it came out right before "The Argument", this EP reflects more towards the style of "End Hits" and "Repeater". No quiet melodies here, folks. The title track, "Furniture", begins the EP with one of the oh-so-loved single picking guitar riffs that begin so many great Fugazi songs. Think "KYEO". The lyrics, as well, are some of the best ever written by Mackaye; his quiet-loud-quiet format fits perfectly with his desperate call-outs of misinterpretation and uselessness. The following track, "Number 5", is an instumental reminiscent of "Arpeggiator", with even more of a bite; just when the riffs become repetitive, you are hit with a sonic screech start-stop that will make this a Fugazi instrumental classic. The final track, "Hello Morning", features Guy Picciotto on vocals, though is the weakest track of the three. While its intro tends to put off at first, the urgent guitar work and wailing vocals redeem themselves later into the song, making it still a great tune, if only outshined by the former two mentioned. I purchaced this album for $4.00 at my local record store, and it was fully worth it. Though I perfer physical manifestations of my music, iTunes is selling this EP at a steal, comparatively. Though this shouldn't be your first taste of Fugazi, I strongly suggest picking this EP up if you are a fan, or even an occasional listener.

A real must: Not left overs

Fugazi has always sounded better live then on their cd's. Over the years their recordings have sounded better and better. It is with this gem of an EP that they are able to completely capture the flow of their live sets.

Flawless

Considering this EP consists of outtakes, these three tracks are as strong as many of Fugazi's most powerful songs. There's one song sung by Ian, an instrumental, and a song sung by Guy, all three of which are Fugazi songs through and through: the dueling guitars intertwine in both moments of melody and abrasiveness, the lyrics are poetic as only Fugazi can be, and the rhythm section proves once again why it's one of the best. All three of the songs are fairly loud and energetic (none are soft), which is perfect for a three-song EP. Easily worth the cost of purchase.

If history is kind to Fugazi, their records won't be overshadowed by their reputation and methods of operation. Instead of being known for their community activism, five-dollar shows, ten-dollar CDs, resistance to mainstream outlets, and the laughably fictitious folklore surrounding their lifestyle, they will instead be identified as setting a high bar for artistic excellence that is frequently aimed for but seldom achieved with great frequency. During their existence, the four-piece created some...
