iTunes Review

Blitzen Trapper's fourth long player (and first Sub Pop outing) reveals the Portland sextet as record collecting musicians who dig a lot of old vinyl by mostly unknown English country rock acts from the 1970s. Their label-mates, the similarly inspired Beachwood Sparks, mined more obvious discographies of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and Gram Parsons. But with Furr Blitzen Trapper dig deeper in the used record bins to draw from the fey and feathered Brit twang of yore. You can hear the woodsy and wistful influence of Matthews Southern Comfort and Plainsong in the floating vocal harmonies on "Stolen Shoes And A Rifle," and the title track is a fantastical Ernie Graham sounding narrative about a child raised by wolves who falls in love with a civilized girl before returning to the wilderness. The delightfully shambolic and catchy-as-hell "War On Machines" boogies hard and boozy on a cow bell while rocking like a young Graham Nash fronting The Band. Amidst the twangy vintage tones and boxcar folk, there is a postmodern Beck-esque groove on some songs like "Black River Killer" that keeps this amazing album from sounding completely retro.

Very good

We grow em good in Oregon. More focused than Wild Mountain Nation, which was great, this seems better, especially the title track, real nice sound to it

Even better than WMN

Wonderful album. Great listening all the way through. Folk rock alt-country country rock whatever. It's good stuff. The songwriting is stronger this time around and the album holds together more consistently than their previous release. I think they've found their niche. Hope they stay there.

They have got their sound down...and it's a damn good sound...

I don't know how you can't like this band...they are original, fun, and ROCKIN'. This band rocks and if you can't tell that by the end of the first track you need to listen to that track over again (because that first one didn't get me till the fourth or fifth listen) and if you are still skeptical...thinking that they are Bob Dylan rip-offs...the second, third, and fourth tracks will have you wondering why you didn't find this band sooner! And besides "Furr", which we all know is one of the best on the album, there are some GREAT songs on this album including "God & Suicide" and of course the contender for best on the album: "Black River Killer" which is...wow...its one of the few on this album that I got immediately...it hits you and you know that wow...this album is something special...there isn't one bad song on this album...they will all hit you eventually and you will realize that this is up there with the recent releases from My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, and Grizzly Bear.
