iTunes Review

Sounding like the next generation of Northwest indie rockers who grew up on Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, and Death Cab for Cutie, Seattle-based quartet the Globes deliver a mature full-length debut. Working with producer John Goodmanson (Death Cab, Sleater-Kinney, Blonde Redhead) they craft a sound built on dynamics, sharp tempo shifts, and unexpected bursts of volume. Beginning with two memorable, hook-filled tracks that quickly grow on you (“Haunted By Bears,” “Pigeon”) the songs get progressively more complex and challenging. The intricately arranged “A Stitch Couldn’t Save the World” and “Pretty Birds Above Our Heads” stretch melodies to the breaking point and then engulf them in layers of noise and gritty textures, and closers “Japan” and “Face Up Facing” artfully incorporate keyboards for added tension. These are four talented musicians and the ways in which the guitars intertwine with a terrific rhythm section produce some truly sublime moments. Innovative in a subtle way, the Globes have absorbed and dissected their share of indie rock from the past 20 years while adding their own imprint to the form.

Absolutely Incredible!

I have been waiting for this record for a long time and already anticipating it to become one of my favorite albums. The songs are undeniably well-crafted and mature. The Globes have become easily my favorite band in Seattle because of the innovative, dissonant, atmospheric brilliance that they create with a rather basic rock band set up. If you enjoy music at all then you will buy this record. The only thing that could have made this record better is if they would have included Wooded Hill, but regardless every song on this release is gold.

A good sound

I can't say they offer anything that's wildly out of the ordinary, but this is a pretty solid cd. Some of their songs remind me of Minus the Bear, with simple guitar riffs accompanied by interesting vocals. All of their songs have a a slightly different sound, so I would recommend previewing all of them before buying any.

Great for nerds

I had the privilege of seeing these open for Minus The Bear in Tucson last october. Wow what a great show. No exageration that was probably the best show I've ever been to. I had never heard of them going to the show and wasn't really expecting much. I was floored by their energy. It was such a tight set. And Minus the Bear is one of the best live bands out there, so it was quite a night. Anyway buy this record, you won't regret it. If you like music with any kind of technicality in it, The Globes are for you.
