4.5 Stars outta 5 !

Mod Fun emerged from New Jersey in the early 1980s as the heirs apparent to the concise slash-and-burn power rock of bands such as The Jam and The Creation. For much of that decade, the band toured the United States and Europe and garnered praise from such luminaries as Paul Weller and Jello Biafra.

Spurred by the success of the reissue of their 1995 best-of “Past Forward” in 2004 and the “Now … and Again” album in 2007, the band entered the studio in 2009 to record “Futurepresent,” a 15-song collection of, well … mod fun.

Album opener “Give” slyly combines the drum line from The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” with Nuggets-era guitar swagger. “A Tale of Two Faces” is a classic northern soul rocker in the tradition of the Style Council that wouldn’t sound out of place on an album by the Stylistics or Amy Winehouse.

The song that best represents Mod Fun’s live show is “Communication Gap” — Chris Collin’s controlled but chaotic drumming competes with bassist Bob Strete’s claw hammer bass runs for supremacy, while Mick Hale’s vocal will have you humming along before the second chorus.

“Futurepresent” is an example of a band firing on all cylinders. For fans of powerpop, punk and ska, this is a no-risk purchase.

This band never ceases to amaze me. I can't believe that they haven't been signed to a bigger label. Maybe they don't want to be. I don't know...I do know that this band should be way bigger and much better known than they are. They blow away so many other bands that play this style of music. Maybe because they were doing it in the early 80's when it wasn't trendy or cool yet. Mod Fun aside from just being a great band ,were way ahead of their time. All the other wanker bands get the credit while amazing bands like Mod Fun paved the way for them. Typical story.
