Album Review

There may be four years separating FWX from the last Fates Warning album, Disconnected, but the progression between the two releases is as fluid as the gap between the their 1988 metallic peak No Exit and 1997 progressive extreme Pleasant Shade of Gray is wide. Both of those career highs come to mind when listening to FWX, "Stranger (With a Familiar Face" and "Simple Human" in particular are distilled from a blend of No Exit's heaviness and Pleasant Shade of Gray's expansiveness. The ten-minute progressive excursions of Disconnected have been reigned in, but make no mistake, this is still a progressive affair, especially on the equally lush and pummeling "River Wide Ocean Deep" and "Heal Me," which make up for their less-than-progressive running times with aggressive riffs that make a welcome return to Fates Warning. Give Jim Matheos, Ray Alder and crew credit: there are few bands that have been around as long (twenty years for founding member Matheos and sixteen for vocalist Alder) that produce albums as consistent or inventive as FWX.

amazing

Like many, I first got into prog-metal through Dream Thater. My appetite for it soon became ravenous and I started searching for more bands. This is the album that introduced me to Fates Warning (I now own 6 of their works) and a year later it still impresses me. I recently couldn't go to sleep so I put on the headphones and listened to FWX with the lights off. I heard so much that I had never noticed before and gained a whole new appreciation for Jim Matheos. His guitar work is outstanding as always (especially the solo on Stranger), but his work with textures and layering on this album really blew my mind on this listen. I'm not much of an electronica fan, but Matheos' programming adds a lot of moodiness. It's very tasteful and blends perfectly with everything else. Standout tracks for me: Simple Human, Another Perfect Day, Handful of Doubt, Stanger

Vocal Virtuosity!!!

Alder on "River Wide Ocean Deep" is a masterpiece of virtuosity! This album gets better each time you listen to it. "Wish" will take you on a journey of positivity. This entire album is fan-freakin-tastic!

Ya I don't know

I don't here anything really new here and its almost a little too slow. Alder tends to just try and hog the spotlight alot. Not bad though, I've heard alot worse

When prog rock first reared its head during the early '70s, it contained elements of hard rock, but few bands crossed the line into heavy metal. This all changed during the '80s, when bands such as Dream Theater, Watchtower, and Fates Warning merged their love of Yes and Rush with their admiration for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Formed in Hartford, CT in 1983, Fates Warning has endured quite a few lineup changes since its inception, with the exception of guitarist Jim Matheos, who has been present...
