Album Review
Following their mixing duties on the Nip/Tuck original soundtrack and Bloom compilation, Gabriel & Dresden is the self-titled debut album from the San Francisco progressive trance duo. Influenced by the likes of alternative acts Depeche Mode and the Cure as well as club DJs James Holden and Sasha, the 2006 LP, released through their own Organized Nature label, combines vintage guitars, Moog synths, and electro beats throughout its continuously mixed 12 tracks. Featuring vocal contributions from the Sarah McLachlan-esque Molly Bancroft and British producer Jan Burton, it includes the singles "Tracking Treasure Down," "Dangerous Power," and the double A-sided "Mass Repeat"/"Eleven." ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

Treasure Found!
Finally, Gabriel & Dresden have their solo album available (no thank to iTunes for the extensive wait...)! Many tracks are soon to become favorites of mine. The album opens with "Let Go", an electronic chill piece that can really calm someone down. "Eleven" and "Enemy" follow, the former a swirling house track that is ready to be heard at clubs. The latter is the most rock-sounding song on the album, and probably one of the best. "Dust In the Wind" and "Mass Repeat" are after, both great house tracks, the latter especially because of its heavy and hypnotic beat. Inconveniently, the two worst tracks are placed close together. "Closer" is an Ian Van Dahl-sounding house track with repetitive synthlines that increase at the chorus. Luckily, airy guitars save the track at the end. "New Path" carries a tedious beat with slurring, tasteless vocals. Fortunately, they are separated by "Not Enough/Amsterdam Interlude" a mesmerizing track that you can't help getting lost in. "Sydney" is a raver's paradise, a trance dream. "Dangerous Power" is next, a fast-paced, trance journey fit for any DJ. The album closes with "Tracking Treasure Down", the lead single, a fun techno track that can appeal to many. The album is a great showcase of Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden's ability to produce electronic music that has emotion. It has its ups and downs, but in the end, this album is a true treasure.
Excellent. Worth the wait.
Truly masters of their craft, Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden have at last assembled an artist album, and it's everything we hoped for and more. Consistent with the sounds of past projects (Andain, Motorcycle, and a handful of remixes), G&D's album is a perfect blend of techno ("Eleven"), trance ("Dangerous Power"), house ("Closer"), electro ("Mass Repeat"), chillout ("Not Enough"), and even industrial ("Sydney"). Features their latest hit, "Tracking Treasure Down," with vocals by Molly Bancroft, who appears prominently throughout the album. All in all, there's something for everyone on this album. Easily one of the best electronic albums of the year.
It's Finally Out, and I'm Moved
I have been waiting for this albut for at least four months, since KCRW/KROQ's Jason Bentley has had an advance copy that he's been playing. This album showcases the power of electronic music when it is crafted as more than music to shake your body to on the dancefloor. It combines the elements of killer beats with what makes other types of music so personally touching. I think the standout track herhe is "Enemy". It is simultaneously energizing and saddening at the same time. It grabs at your heart, but leaves you moving to the beat in your chair. "Tracking Treasure Down" was the main single that came out back in the Spring, which is also a good tune with quality vocals. There are a couple of completely and primarily instrumental tracks, along with some other good vocal tracks like "Let Go" and the cover of "Dust of the Wind". If you're at all curious about electronic music but don't know an album to try buying--THIS IS THE ONE. This album hasn't even been released domestically yet, so buy this and be a step ahead of all of your friends.
