Album Review
The unprecedented worldwide success of multinational British-based power metallers DragonForce has cast an unexpected light upon German speed metal trailblazers Helloween. Perhaps the first band to convincingly combine thrash metal intensity with the melody and majestic imagery of the NWOBHM, and by extension the blueprint upon which DragonForce based their "extreme power metal" style, Helloween were a heavy metal institution, but one that had very much fallen by the wayside upon the departure of classic-era singer Michael Kiske and founder/guitarist Kai Hansen in the mid-'90s. Singer Andi Deris has been a permanent fixture ever since, but the band has found stable lineups difficult to come by, and the quality of material has been equally inconsistent. Following 2005's Keeper of The Seven Keys: The Legacy, on which the band attempted to revive the style of their mid-'80s classics, Gambling with the Devil is a little more calculated. The appearance of Saxon mainstay Biff Byford on the intro track "Crack the Riddle" is all too foreboding, however: for all its enthusiasm, Gambling with the Devil is unbending, inelastic, and indulgent heavy metal. Far from offering something new to the genre, Gambling with the Devil's progressive elements act as a smoke screen for a genuine lack of ideas, typified in no small measure by the dull extended interlude wedged in the middle of otherwise wonderful ballad "Fallen to Pieces." Gambling with the Devil may satisfy the diehards, but new entrants would be well advised to stick to the earlier material.

Much better than Rabbit Don't Come Easy
This is the best I've heard from Helloween since the Dark Ride. Final Fortune, the Saints, Paint a New World are really good. "Kill It" paints a dark tone for the CD, which is good, but the rest of the CD isn't nearly as dark. As Long As I Fall is OK. It sounds like it could get radio play, but after hearing the rest of the CD, it just seems out of place with the songs around it. There are 2 tracks not here which you can get if you buy the CD: Find My Freedom and See The Night. Why doesn't iTunes offer that? Also, you can buy the 256kbps VBR versions from Amazon MP3..... however you do it, make sure you buy this one. Very good. Paint a New World is so damn catchy that I can't stop listening to it. Final Fortune is very good (especially the solo), Fallen to Pieces is great to listen to and has a nice little prog moment in the middle. Can Do It is a song I can do without. It reminds of me of what little I heard on Pink Bubbles Go Ape.... Why it's here? I don't know. It sounds like filler, but the highlights of this CD outshine that. I guess every great album needs a "Thing That Should Not Be" song. Buy this album. If you don't want the whole thing, at least get Paint a New World, Final Fortune, Fallen to Pieces. Those are 3 of the best I've heard from them since The Dark Ride.
WOW!
The most underated metal band of all time! This is seriously an amazing album. I may be a fan of bands like green and mcr, but this is still amazing. ROCK ON!
Should Have Been...
Seriously, this truly is what KOT7K: The Legacy should have been. Solos are scorching, Roland who? Sasha conjurs both Kai and Roland. I still miss Uli though Dani fills the roll nicely. Serious Euro Power Metal. I haven't been this excited about Helloween since Better Than Raw. Mix is fantastic. The whole album is easily Helloween's best in years IMHO!
